Ortofon carts are too hot for my phono preamp? Lack of dynamic range/headroom on some phono stages certainly exists. Sell the Avid and use the Pro-Ject. The Ortofon mm's have typical output levels.
Help me choose a phono pre Another recommendation is the Moon 110LPv2 for $599. This also features loading options.
Help me choose a phono pre A good recommendation is the Schiit Mani 2 for $160. Michael Fremer of the Tracking Angle likes it. Yes, you can spend 10, 20, 30 X more for a phono stage but diminishing returns for sonic improvements set in quickly.
Desperate to Get Back to Horns @viridian Thank you for clarifying the difference between the Altec 19’s and the Speaker Lab 7's. The author of the quote is Thomas Wolfe - not Hardy.
About Koetsu Rosewood @viridian I am certain that a $17K phono stage is not 100 times better than a $160 Mani 2. Michael Fremer likes it! BTW I have an ARC SP6 for phono use.
About Koetsu Rosewood The OP should get that SAEC arm set up so he can use low compliance mc cartridges.
For Those Who Are Unaware of The Cable Company The hills are alive with the Sound of Wire!
Desperate to Get Back to Horns There are probably some Altec 19's available online somewhere. Why not just buy a pair? They are not really that large - about the size of my Speaker Lab Seven's - which have midrange and tweeter horns plus 12" woofers.
About Koetsu Rosewood How many here are going to spend $17K on a phono stage? I don't see many hands going up. Even a $160 Schiit Mani 2 will show off the Koetsu's positive attributes!
KOESTSU IS BACK KOETSU!
About Koetsu Rosewood I recommend that you test the Koetsu using the Shure Test Record to see how it performs on various groove modulations. For transducers like cartridges and speakers objective tests should be part of the evaluation process.
Tune of the Day @jpwarren58 That’s Nils Lofgren!
Aleph 3 safe to operate? Keep the Stasis 3 for the bass.
Aleph 3 safe to operate? Get a variac and slowly ramp up the AC voltage over a day. Then use a multimeter to check the DC voltage on each speaker outputs. If the DC voltage is low - several millivolts then try a pair of speakers.
Is my Dynaco Stereo 400 worth repairing for resale? Your Dynaco 400 might not need any immediate work. Put it on a variac to reform the power supply caps. Then use a multi-meter to check the DC voltage on the two speaker outputs. If those show only a few millivolts of DC try the amp with a pair of ... |
