Why do some audiophiles beat up McIntosh? Donjr - I also like McIntosh gear. Though the years of being on the merry-go-round of equipment by various manufacturers, I regret the Mc gear I sold. In my experience it is well-made, robust both mechanically and electrically, nice to look at, so...
Khorn room size I enjoy the sound of my KHorns in a similar size room. However I built false corners for them using 3/4" plywood so I could change the angle of the speakers. Part of the problem in such a small room is the speakers are not far enough apart and the...
Rega RS5s - side ports in or out? I have the smaller RS3's and I read somewhere (forget where) to place the woofers in or out based on how far they are from the nearest object or boundary. If the speakers are close to a side wall, then place them in. If the speakers are closer tog...
I heard Emotive bought Bob Carvers tube company Probably will turn into more junk made in China.
Reissue of Threshold S350e? Out of curiosity I looked at the e-bay auction for these Chinese-made Thresholds. The photos showed wire nuts on some of the internal wiring!!! Good luck with the "quality" aspect of that. I will stick with old Made in USA as opposed to new junk.
Rogue M180 or Antique Sound Lab Hurricane DT? Although I have never owned anything from ASL I have a hard time believing they are made with such quality (made in China). Especially after reading the Soundstage review where they couldn't even review the amps without taking them to the repair s...
Upgrade path: Rega RS1 vs. Vintage Floorstanders I had the R1's and I also liked them very much, but I felt they lacked some bass. I traded them to my local dealer and got a pair of RS3's which I like very much. They seem to maintain the resolution and detail of the R1 (or RS1) and have the adde...
The Audio Research Reference 10 is here $30k This is a more general comment about ARC. I was always a big fan of theirs with alot of respect for their equipment. My father owned their gear since the company started in the early 70's. A few examples of what I have onwed through the years (not...
Magnepan MG-1 sonically challenged? I enjoyed my MG1's for years, then I tried a pair of MMG's. In my opinion the little MMG's were better, even though they were much smaller in size. They actually seemed to resolve the bass better than the larger MG1's. Also consider my MG1's were ...
How do I smooth out violins? Bojack - I agree with your thoughts that the NAD pre-amp may be the cuplrit (it is only a guess). I have owned and enjoyed NAD gear, but to me it can be a bit harsh at times. It is worth a try to substitute a different pre-amp if you have the oppo...
Mc Intosh vs other brands Taters - Get a life and a clue!!
MARTIN LOGAN TRIPLES THEIR PANEL REPLACEMENT Peterayer - I agree with what you are saying and I guess I didn't think of it in terms of re-sale. When I sold the speakers I gave the old set of panels tot he new owner. My issue is (assuming the speakers are staying with the same owner) you shou...
MARTIN LOGAN TRIPLES THEIR PANEL REPLACEMENT Glad I sold my Aerius-i. I loved those speakers but one had a weak panel and ML forces you to buy the pair. A few years ago the pair cost me $500 so I can't imagine what they are now. I also understand they want the panels to be matched, but that ...
Conrad Johnson Sonographe sa400 or McCormack DNA-1 I can't speak for the SA400 but I had an SA120 and it sounded terrible to me (as Wig stated). The amp sounded completely un-natural. Years later I owned a McCormack DNA 0.5 and thought it was a great amp - there was no comparing the two. I don't k...
Belles Research Corporation? ? I also looked at some old Belles gear locally - the amp was a model 150 and the preamp was a Symphonic. The only information I could find indicated the equipment was made in the late 1980's or early 1990's. The equipment was very well made and sou... |
