Neat Momentum SX5i or Rega RX5
I have the RS3's which are the previous model and a size down from the RX5's.  I have often thought of upgrading to the 5's but I can say the Rega speakers are very nice. I bought them new after owning the RS1 and I was not disappointed. They are ...
Audio Research D300 vs Classe DR9
I cannot speak for the Classe other than I know it is very fine gear. I did, however own a D300 years ago and I wish I would have never sold it. At the time I was driving a pair of Magnepan MG 1.6 and I switched off between the ARC and several oth...
B&W - 704 vs Matrix 804
I cannot speak for the 804, but I owned the 704, 603S3 and the 684. First I owned the 603S3 years ago. I bough them based on the reviews (big mistake) and listening to them at the local dealer. Got them home and listeners fatigue set in after awhi...
Re-capping A 15 Year Old Solid State Amp
I am not implying that one should purposely buy an amp 15 years old or older, but I am saying that I don't think they should be afraid to either, if it is made of quality components. There is no reason to be afraid of an amp that was not manufactu...
Re-capping A 15 Year Old Solid State Amp
Ebm - In your statement "I won't buy a 15 year old amp as its history!!" all I can say is you must be buying throw-away junk!!. I have owned many Solid State and Tube amps much older than that from reputable companies (ARC, Conrad-Johnson, McCorma...
Is your tube amp really a tube amp?
In my limited experience I have listened to and owned some amps that were all tube (tube rectifier, voltage regulator, etc.) and some that were tube but had solid state retifiers and voltage regulators. To me, the ones with solid state components ...
Do true audiophiles own Mcintosh gear
Taters - Since you have managed to repeatedly bash McIntosh gear on multiple threads, please enlighten the rest of us and suggest gear that you think is "good" since you obviously feel that McIntosh is "no good".
Amp and preamp on same outlet?
In the "old days" Preamps had switched outlets on the back where you would plug the amps into because the amps did not have a power switch. Some examples from ARC were the SP3A (still one of the best sounding Preamps I have ever heard) and the SP6...
Do true audiophiles own Mcintosh gear
People can criticize McIntosh gear all they want but it is durable, well-made, aesthetically pleasing, sounds good, and holds its value. Not saying it is perfect, but I also don't understand where all the criticism comes from.
Tube Amp for Martin Logan Speakers
I ran Martin Logan Aerius-i with an Audio Research VT60 on the 4 Ohm taps and it sounded great (wish I would have never sold that amp) and I listen fairly loud. At the time I also had a Bryston 3B and believe it or not, the ARC gave the percerptio...
New Thiel Speakers - Post Jim Thiel Era
I love my old 1.2's and thought of upgrading to 1.7's but now I problably won't. I hope the company survives, but Jim Thiel was the visionary for the unique speakers they produced. With him gone, that vision is also gone, and they may be left with...
Tried a Bryston 4B with Maggies
Zd542 - I sold the D300 when I sold the Maggies. Naturally I now regret it.
Tried a Bryston 4B with Maggies
I used a 3B with my 1.6's and it sounded great. I agree with the statements that have been made regarding synergy of the Bryston Amps with the Magnepans. It was one of the best Solid State Amps I heard with those speakers (I like the Audio Researc...
For 35 years, I'm an Audiophile wanna be
In my opinion you are better off having the ARC gear repaired and it will be good for another 35 years. My Father still has the SP3A, Dual 75 and Dual 51 he bought in the early 70's and it still all works and sounds great.
Any experience with Arc ref75 driving magnepans
I read the Stereophile review of the Ref75 and they mentioned the appearance with the meters was similar to the D79. If the Ref75 will not drive magnepans, however, that must be the only similarity between the 2 amps. I say that because I have a D...
