Tube Preamps Should Have This Feature
@ghdprentice  power tubes do age faster, but those are in the output stage of an amplifier, not in the power supply section usually, though some power tubes can be used as rectifiers and in some regulation positions.
Tube Preamps Should Have This Feature
@ghdprentice  both my pieces of equipment have tube rectified power supplies, no solid state devices in the power supplies.
Herron Audio...Still in business
@soix  almost every high end audio component made can be hard to find proprietary components like circuit boards even if the company is still in business. These companies don't generally keep a stock of this stuff for discontinued items very...
Tube Preamps Should Have This Feature
I just leave my tube preamp and tube DAC on all the time, unless I'm away for more than a day or during thunderstorms. I have no problem with tube life.
Class D amplifiers. What's the future look like?
You must not have had a big krell amp if you were constantly clipping it.
Preamp for a GaN-FET amp...
I don't see Ralph using opamps for his preamps, so I really don't know what he is talking about.
They know we will pay anything they can think of
Sounds to me like the OP wants a $22,000 preamp for $1,200 . I would like a Bentley for the price of a Kia, but that's not how the world works.
Five feet from the front wall
@bdp24  I take it you were not direct driving the Divas, it's a whole different animal if you are using an active crossover and directly driving the speaker. I don't like using subwoofers with the apogees,  I've never heard a subwoofer that has th...
Five feet from the front wall
@bdp24  I have apogee duetta 2 speakers and my room is on the live side, but my speakers are just over 82" from the wall and sound great without any damping. I think it depends if you have them far enough from the wall behind the speaker you may n...
Five feet from the front wall
Why don't we just say the wall behind the speaker?
Five feet from the front wall
I found that my apogee duetta 2 sound best 82" from the wall, there is no bass problem as long as you have proper amplification.
300b lovers
@charles1dad  when Thomas Mayer first started building tube amps for his personal use, he built them for 3 phase power. He also loves vinyl, even though his regular job was digital electronics.
WHY CABLES MATTER!
@asctim  the cable that goes from left to right channel in the Polk sda is out of phase and does work really well. I've had Polk sda2a speakers for over 30 years and with upgraded crossovers and tweeters they do some things better than My apogee d...
300b lovers
I really like Thomas Mayer's 300B amplifiers, but I don't have deep enough pockets for that. You two seem to be on the right track with your 300B, and it's more affordable than his.
What I hear vs simplistic specs ( entry DAC/Preamps)
I never understood buying equipment on specs, just buy what sounds good to you. You may be surprised that the best measuring equipment doesn't always sound the Best.
