Why do no audio enthusiasts use McIntosh? I'm not sure I completely agree with the esoterica argument, but this site is mainly made up of people that own products they've purchased FROM this site. Most Mac owners simply do not upgrade, and they keep their gear FOREVER. And besides, most M...
Power cord recommendation for REL Strata III? Look at diycable.com. Ol' Kevin builds the cables himself if you want, so don't be put off by the DIY thing. Try the asylum cord (which I have three of...and LOVE), or, if you're feeling a little saucy, go for the Straight Jacket. VERY VERY good s...
Mcintosh Vs Proceed I live in Ft. Worth, and visit Marvin's Electronics on a monthly basis (many of my friends work there). I cannot remember the Mac equipment numbers, but it was a home theater setup of Mac vs. Proceed, with B&W 801's for the front and 805's for...
Which small but great monitors? Second the SdCampbell recco's of Krix Equinox (AMAZING SPEAKER, HIGH SENSITIVITY), Reynaud (awesome speaker as well, just make sure to break it in right!), and Triangle Commete (best speaker I've ever heard for the price...period). For a little mo...
Sound Quality: Computer vs. CD Player Onhwy61, what do you use to RIP your CD's onto your hard drive? Or do you just download the full WAV version off of the internet? A friend experiemented with this on his computer (6x100GB hard drives in JOB configuration) and we could never get up...
What is the BEST resistor for audio use Ignore the whole "SNAKE OIL" bit. IF you couldn't hear the difference in my SET monoblocks when I switched from No-Name Caps to Ansar Supersounds, then you don't have ears. Again, when I switched the resistors from standard mil spec to Kiwami in t...
Speakers for the party system PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE DON'T EVER USE HIGH-END SPEAKERS TO PLAY AT A PARTY! Done it twice, lost two pairs of speakers. Do yourself a favor and invest in some EV pro-audio cabinets or something. Go down to Mars or Guitar center and see what they thin...
What is the BEST resistor for audio use www.diyhifisupply.com sells goldpoint kits that include the Vishay/Dales and instructions on assembly. It's a tedious soldering job, but well worth the effort! Cheers!
Sound Quality: Computer vs. CD Player Ok, I'll say this now. Using a computer for a transport is NOT advisable for a top-notch kit. Think about it...a CD-ROM drive is generally the cheapest transport the manufacturer can use to spec. Computers throw off HORDES of RF interference. The ...
What is the BEST resistor for audio use It's all a matter of taste. I tend to prefer Kiwami resistors in tubed applications, as Vishays can sound a little too analytical. However, from what I've heard, the Vishay/Dales are the finest sounding resistors for the Goldpoint stepped attenuat...
Connecting two amps-bi-amp cabling Correct if I'm wrong, but wouldn't connecting two amp channels to the same speaker terminals create a zero impedance loop in between those amp channels? It seems that such a hookup would destroy any amplifier, just like touching the positive and n...
SACD transport? Accuphase offers such a product, but alas, since there is no format standard, you must buy the matching Accuphase DAC. They use two digital outs to transfer the monstrous signal. Cheers!
Have you heard Rockport speakers? Hey Bill - I'm 20, and I'm a EE student too! Mind if I tag along? :) Cheers!
making our own custom cables/interconnects ... Well, it's not really that simple. I agree with Drrasta that the best place to start looking is the asylum. Simply taking silver wire and wrapping it with rubber will not yield good results. There are many, many great DIY ideas for cables out ther...
"Pictures From Exhibition" best recording? I'm not sure there are any great recordings of the piano version of the Mussorgski piece, but there are quite a few of the Ravel orchestration of it. Look for the Solti performances, as well as the famous Karajan ones. They're all very well recorded. |
