Why can't I get clear sound?
What sound card are you using? If the same D/A output is causing the sound to be muffled, I'd be willing to bet that an inferior sound card is the problem. Try the Turtle or an upper level Creative Labs, and see what happens. But, in the long run,...
How to design music room?
What are you looking for? Noise isolation for listening? A good acoustical environment? Both? Both of the questions could be easily addressed, but you'll need to be more specific. Cheers!Brian
Sound Proofing 101
This really requires two things. First, sound travels through everything in the room...not just the wall. It travels through the floor, the ceiling, any common airducts, etc. Your best solution will probably be to make a wall, with a gap, as menti...
which cartridge to buy? so many...
Dynavector 10x4, no question.
Why is my composite so bad?
First off, you will DEFINITELY have to recalibrate your TV with component. Chances are your setting are askew to compensate for crappy composite, rather than superior component. The AVIA DVD, while a little pricey, is a MUST HAVE for any half-way ...
I don't understand Miles Davis' "Kind of Blue"
The reason this CD is a "mile"stone is that virtually all music after 1955 was influenced by this album. The "background" music, as you call it, is accompaniment for the soloist, and yes, it is repetitious because jazz, by nature, cycles through a...
Cable Comparison-Stage 1
Setting up new cables for different disks? Are you crazy? It's that level of audiophile nerd-ism that makes others shy away from this hobby. Here's a time frame:Choosing music: 5 minSetting VTA: 15 minChanging cables: 5-15 (depending on how carefu...
Home Theater for 10K
First, (and I don't mean this in a bad way), women generally enjoy the most elegant (read: easy to use) setup when it comes to electronics. For this reason I'd recommend the Linn Classik DVD, which is a DVD player, processor, preamp, and amp all i...
Hey Texasphiles...
Hey all. Tenatively, we're going to have another gathering at Whetstone Audio in Austin on the 2nd of August, but we're going to try to do it a little differently. Because of the unexpectedly large turnout last time, component swapping turned into...
Converting S-Video to Component??
RDL makes one. It's not cheap, but not expensive either. It's a "professional grade" unit, meaning not much in the way of picture quality. Cheers!Brian
Coolest looking speaker ever ?
German Physiks Tiebreak
what is diff: Class "A", "A/B", and "B"
I don't know what a "power envelope" is, but the difference between class "A" and "B" is how the signal is split when it is amplified. In a class A amplifier, the entire signal, split into parts, + and -, is run through two identical amplifying ci...
LISTENER Magazine...What Do You Think?
I think that Listener is the best audio magazine on the planet. The writers poke fun at this obsessive, often elitist hobby (the picture of a Wilson X-1 used as a boat anchor in one issue is on my wall). It brings a much needed degree of levity to...
MC cartridge with "big rich and life-like"
I'd also throw the Dynavector 20X and 17L Karat into that mix. Both VERY life-like, with tons of balls to boot. Also, more economical than the aforementioned carts. Cheers!
Cambridge Audio A500 vs. Creek 4330mk2 your
IMHO (which is all I can give), Cambridge isn't in the same league as Creek. Much hype about the stuff, but I haven't heard one piece that impressed me over my 50 dollar Onkyo. The 4330 SE is a killer, and the inexpensive phono upgrade is a great ...
