SummerTime and Amp Heat Cannot assume that power supply are automatically hot if the heatsink is hot.....Bombaywalla (System | Reviews | Threads | Answers | This Thread)There are plenty of resistors close enough to the coupling, and other caps inside the amp to soak up t...
SummerTime and Amp Heat The links are to long to post. Just Google capacitor life shortened by heat.
SummerTime and Amp Heat 05-30-11: OnemugFans? We don't need no stinkin fans! (loosely quoted from Blazing Saddles).I live in the desert southwest, A/C works for me. My Pass monoblocks run pretty hot but Nelsons designs account for this and seem to last for a long time. I...
SummerTime and Amp Heat It depends on the design too. I run a fan on some amps that run hot, and can shorten the caps lives. I don't like hot transformers either, power or output. If it runs real warm, I use a muffin fan, summer or winter.
4-ohm setting with 8 ohm speakers A lot of amps like to see a higher impedance on their outputs, and do sound better this way. One tube amp company was using only a 4 ohm tap at their outputs for this reason.
4-ohm setting with 8 ohm speakers The output tubes or transistors will see less of a load using the 4 ohm tap, perhaps maybe half of what it would using the 8 ohm tap. That is the purpose of output transformers (impedance matching), and autoformers.
Manual vs. Auto Bias I still say buy it for sound, unless there's a reason for not doing it yourself. Some may be to hard to do, but check out if you could do manual bias first on an amp you may like. After having at least 20- 30 or more in my system, I have heard gre...
Manual vs. Auto Bias I don't have any preference. I go by what has the sound I want.
Rogue Audio M 180 fuse upgrade Never change the value of a fuse from the recommended value. Something small may short and blow the proper fuse. That can turn into a small repair. If that small part shorts and can't blow the fuse, something bigger may give and cost a lot more. W...
Setting tube bias I re-read (after more coffee) and caught the one at a time. That does sound like a bias problem.
Multiple Receivers - One set of speakers Use extra care to make sure you don't accidentally run two or more receivers at once, with this type of switch. This can damage any you tie together at the same time.
Setting tube bias 05-18-11: GmsassoThanks everyone. I tried the KTs again, one at a time, and it is still a problem. I'm taking the amp in for a check up.Gmsasso (Threads | Answers | This Thread)Sounds like you have a local shop to make it easy. If something is wro...
Setting tube bias I guess another thing that would come into play, would be how much current the bias can supply in the amp. It is not something to play with since it can put to much of a load on the transformers too.
Setting tube bias Atmasphere, if one tube has a short, couldn't it pull the minus bias voltage for the other three down with it? Also, possibly send positive voltage on the bias from one shorted tube? If this is the case, a tube tester may not show the defective tu...
Setting tube bias 05-17-11: GmsassoThanks all. It would be strange for all 4 KT-88s to go bad at the same time. No one said all four have gone bad at once. You need to test all four to see if any of them are bad. In most cases, that's the easiest, and cheapest meth... |
