Need help/advice on choosing a new CDP
Reports from the front are that the new Rotel player is very good, but the amp/pre is forward and fatiguing. I would be careful about auditioning this player along with this amp even though Rotel considers them stablemates. The above advice on the...
Anyone Going to the Axpona Show in March in Jackso
I really would like to go since I live in Florida - the most non audiophile state. We're all deaf down here. The retirees have tons of money but wouldn't dare spend it on Hi Fi or music since they just don't care. Better to buy season tickets to a...
Cartridge rec. f/Nottingham Spacedeck w/Space Arm
When I had a Spacedeck, I had great sound with a Dynavector 10X Gold. It was better than the more expensive Grado Master. However, on the Well Tempered table the Grado was the clear winner. 10X Gold is I believe no longer available but you might t...
Cartridge recommendations
Not sure about your Project, but, for what it's worth, I can tell you that I never had a hum or dance issue with a Grado Master (high output) on either the Space deck, original AR, or, Well Tempered Super tables.
Is Magnepan MG IIIa noticeably better than MG 2.7
Had the 111A's for 10 or so years and they are great speakers. The true ribbon tweeters are wonderful but you do have to have a simpatico system to get the ultimate sweetness out of them. That isn't hard to do, just takes a bit of effort. However,...
Anyone use the tweeter attenuation on Maggies?
I tried the attenuators on my MG111A's on a few occasions and the sound always was worse. Sure, it attenuated the treble, but, along with it went alot of air and life. It is like the same reason I never liked Dolby with my tape recordings. Sure, i...
Any experience with EZ-80s, 5687s or Bendix 6900s?
I have tried a bunch of EZ 81 rectifiers in my system and the old Mullards are King. The plain old RCA's are also very good and probably less rare and precious. Now, according to Cary, the EZ 80 is a direct drop in replacement for the EZ81's in th...
Loose driver mounting screws on Velodyne HGS-18
Locktight makes a special formula for this particular application. It is called "TITE'N". I used it once with good success on the side rails of Magnepans. This is designed for wood, rather than metal materials.
vintage 6BQ5/EL-84 amp/klipsch speakers
You're on the right track. Never heard them together myself, but I have heard that the Fisher 30A mono's work really well with Klipschorns. 30A's have become my "reference" amps, although with a totally different type of speaker than you are sugge...
Who asked for this?
I don't have any, but I don't doubt that they (can) result in the best LP sound possible. The science of it just makes sense. I wouldn't mind the extra fuss, cleaning, etc. It would be worth it for superior sound. it's the price that keeps me away...
Do you ever wonder?
Can't agree with all your choices, especially, Rickie Lee Jones, although she does seem to be in a long lasting slump. The single one that puzzles me the most these days, (other than EVERYONE from those stupid TV talent shows) is U2. No rhythm, no...
Morch Moerch UP4 or DP6
I had the UP4 on a Spacedeck and was very happy. My feeling now however is that I should have sprung for the 6 because I believe it really would have been better. Not sure how I can come to that conclusion since I have never heard one, but my thou...
Review: Manley Laboratories Manley Mahi Tube amp
It's the EL84's! They are the king!
Light bulbs are constanly burning out
Heres an interesting side story: A few years ago I replaced all the switches and wall plugs in the house because we changed the color to white. This place was built in 1979, so the originals were a bit different than what is available today. I did...
The Best CD player under $1000.
I've been looking at this range of players for quite a while and although some are a bit over one grand, this is what is on my list: Rotel 1072, Music Hall 25.2, Cayin CD 50T, Cambridge 740C. Most Audiogoners will tell you not to bother and just g...
