How do you listen?
Each music experience is different, biologically we adjust to volume by concentrating on that part of the sound that includes voice. This makes us more able to distinguish voices from background noise.  In hifi terms however you lose upper level a...
In praise of isolation.
In my engineering degree we studied the effect of machinery vibrations on adjacent machinery and how it effected its performance, it can be very significant working with precision machinery, hifi needs to be ridiculously precise. Speakers are esse...
In praise of isolation.
With such a low mass load e.g. a turntable and such limited movement in micrometres, the springs will not act as springs but more like a solid piece of metal.
The Most Cost Effective Tweak
I bag of sound insulation used as two bass traps, total cost, AUD$50, and lot of hard work.
Anyone dislike Ohm Walsh speakers?
I have a dedicated music room that has been hard to get right and have tried to audition omni directional speakers. COVID has not helped and no dealer in Adelaide has anything omni directional.  The Ohm Walsh has been top of that list.  However I ...
What do audiophiles do in their cars?
For many years I owned a Volvo sports with a Dynaudio stereo. I played it in the showroom when I bought the car, and never again. I never listen to music in the car, I never have music on in the house. I never have background music on anywhere.  I...
Cost Effective System Improvement?
I keep trying Rasberry Pi solutions, they are getting more complex and expense but not any better. Everyone sounds dull, everyone is a nightmare to set up, everyone has been so unreliable I have given it away.
Best Integrated that you've heard under $5k
Naim products are consistently rated better than Hegel $4$.
Would Appreciate Advice Before I Buy
Never heard a Klipsch that didn't fry my ears, The Wharfedale Linton's were so laid back I thought they had fallen over. Of all speakers mention I found Elac's a trifle bright but OK if matched well. If you really like the Klipsch and I know peopl...
How much does power amplifier really matter comparing to other hi-fi components?
In my experience this is impossible to determine. I currently use an Audiolab 6000CDT with Denifrips Ares ii total recommended retail cost AUD$2300, with Audio Physic speakers and 2 subwoofers RRP cost AUD$9500 and Vincent pre / power amp at RRP A...
Interesting experience with two very different speaker designs
Every speaker is a function of its concept, design and execution.  After listening to probably thousands of speakers it is clear that some organisations do some configurations better than others, KEF with small concentric designs, Tannoy with larg...
Combining home theater with two channel
Gave away multi channel altogether and have never missed it. The same money spent on 2 channel yields much better results.
Why are there no tube televisions anymore?
Why no tube TV's? Cost, reliability, resource usage and a hundred other reasons.
3way replacement for my 2way
Linton's were the worst speakers I heard this year, if I discount all the Klipsch.
If your down on your system…
Expectation bias is at play, when you hear something at $100,000 you expect to be completely whooped but my not be. I find if I listen to a system I cannot afford mine sounds better than I thought.
