A Very Narrow Listening Room
2.5 ft. from the side walls and 4.25 from the back (approx.)The Cardas golden ratio usually works (when it does) in "normal" rooms (i.e. ones whose dimensions happen to follow the 1:1,618:2,618 sequence).Your room is narrow, so I suggested you go ...
A Very Narrow Listening Room
Place each spkr ~2,4 from its adjacent side wall (that's woofer centre to side wall). This is a starting for narrow, long rooms with spkrs firing down the long side.Best, however, is to FIRST determine the distance fm the back wall. Move one spkr ...
Mil. spec .25 oil cap as good as Jensen oil Caps
I've liked oils with low-level signalWhere I was going to try them was the coupling capsWell, I suppose you can always try them out -- rather than purchase a whole new bunch of audiophile approved Jensens.Have you checked them out?
Preamp gain vs. poweramp sensitivity
what exactly does "20db of gain" in a preamp meanThe pre amplifies the input ~100 times. Assuming this is voltage gain, of course. As to the 2V in 2V out, remember the pre has a volume control. So it attenuates the output as required.Check the rate...
benefits of adding a power amp to a budget system?
What's your most frequently used source?
Safe way to change cables with tube amp on...
I would strongly second Warner's caution above. You shouldn't leave a tube amp without a load and using a resistor across the taps is very prone to mistakes -- remember a resistor would have to be connected to the live taps!!
Your vote: Most Useless Audio Adjective
"Ruthlessly revealing". Tsk, tsk. Better still, "ruthlessly revealing, not for the faint-hearted".
Zu on Zu
Suffice to say that you can't just wire a Druid up on a bench and measure it without knowing how to set it upCobra, relax: 1)You don't measure a speaker on a bench -- or "set up" for that matter. You do it anechoic or simulated anechoic (use a sho...
IMAGE PROBLEMS VOCALS OFF CENTER
Try what Seandtaylor recommends above. Then, also try forward toeing-in /very slightly/ your right speaker -- i.e. the speaker the vocals are closest to.
Audiophile Electrocution
I once leaned on my bench supply and put the palm of my hand across the 450V B+ rectifier diodes and grounded chassisOuch! That makes two of us. I got hit in the air (ark).
taming a nasty treble response
My Maggies are raised about 8 inches off the floor, with open space underneath and I think it helpsFor one thing, it reduces floor bounce...
Best One Country System?
I thought Canada was covered by the thread iniator.
contradictory communication
Mrtennis sez:i would like my stereo to recreate as closely as possible the sound of an instrument, meaning its timbreRather than focus on how "music sounds" (i.e. sonic attributes) I would suggest instead, to focus on reproducing the intent/signat...

Anti-cables alternatives
There are your own... i.e. buy magnet wire 20-22g for IC and 16-18 for spkr, AND, twist the IC, attach connectors and there you are!
