Audiophiles vs DIY-o-philes
Shadorne sezUnfortunately for me I have tin ears...so I am lost from the get go!Lol!I admit to liking oscilloscopes -- they are very useful. As well as unsmoothed RTA and FFT -- lots of fun. What about DSPs -- great machines (sound is often a bit ...
Active Crossover Recommendations
the cap would of course go in series w/ the high freq amp, while the low freq amp (the sub) you could simply rely on its own internal crossover to filter out higher freq infoFor hi pass, cap in series, correct.Matching the two xovers, however, may...
Active Crossover Recommendations
Rhyno, I assume you;re referring to a passive line level low-pass? If so, 1st order Butterworth is C= 1/2pi(F)(Ramp)(1+a). F= xover frequency, Ramp is the amp's impedance, a is the relation between amps' gain. I.e. if a=1, the amps to be used have...
Replace the Supratek Chardonnay with Accuphase?
Jay:I m no expert but in general tube amps compared to a SS *lack* bassActually it's the interface with the wrong spkrs that does that. BUT, anyway, you're speaking of the pre. Normally, there shouldn't be problems at one end of the spectrum (i.e ...
most accurate loudspeakers....
There is an old comparison of ATC-300 and Dunlavy something here. If I were to stress the point, I would agree that there is some irregularity at the upper mid region at high spls; maybe that unit is somewhat stretched, or the cross to the tweet b...
most accurate loudspeakers....
Roypan -- the measured distortion levels produced by ATC at high spl are comparatively low (unlike many PA systems). That's actually a useful thing.
Isophon Cassiano or what?
Another idea along the lines of Sphere would be Gradient -- their offerings are small with good dispersion characteristics -- particularly helpful in a small room. (BTW, they aren't danish but finnish; but Finland is closer to you than the US!)
music , mind , thought and emotion
Bin One of the greatest threads with some of the greatest people. I love and miss your passion! Where have you all gone? You echo my occasional nostalgic musings! I am Detlof's old thread is back again (it would be even nicer if he were back, too)....
a Power vs Volume Question
Nope, Herman, tsk, tsk:) I referred to dB spl: 20log(delta L). Remember, the relation W = V2/R. It's 20 log, so 6.See elevick's chart above. Cheers.
a Power vs Volume Question
Further to Herman above, each doubling of SOUND PRESSURE level (i.e. spl), i.e. what we "listen to", is 6dB. You need four times the "power" to achieve double sound pressure -- in fact twice "as loud". Yr mic should record +6 dB when your power ri...
Rec's for a dull sounding analog system
This is curious. A "better" TT provides better information retrieval (i.e. extension, dynamic impact, etc) -- but even your bog-standard Linn should be superior in many ways to yr Wadia -- esp as it's been set-up by experienced people. So, the prob...
Amp for Quad ESL 57
I wonder whether the new Quad II-Forty might a better choice. Any idea?I don't particularly like most of the new Macs... BUT my idea is, it is most unlikely. Keep the Mac. The Mac's weak point is the phono, then the pre section (BUT, you do get to...
Gain and Loading
Gain: given the cartridge output, 40-50dB would be indicated. If you have a normal cdp, try to get similar amplitude (i.e. ~2V entering the pre section.Loading: >1000 is hardly specific. While 47k ohm is standard for MM, it would be best if you...
James Randi vs. Anjou Pear - once and for all
Peter s: I guess my concern is whether such an experiment could be run in a convincing way...Good point. I assume it's not as simple as it seems at first glance. Not for $1M, surely.Otherwise, there would be ways to "rig" the results... say, using...
Speaker Preferences?
what is the reference for an electric guitar, unless you happen to own the electric guitar played on a recordingWeeell, just because you mentioned the guitar (presumably, as an example), there is some sonic signature re, different brands of guitar...
