Philips 963SA normal characteristics?
Philips is Dutch, the 963 I have is made in Hungary. The sound is generally as you describe -- it gets better with time, as all others have noted.OTOH, this player has a good DVD image and some very good components inside. It's a prime candidate f...
Glenn Gould piano recording of Beethoven
Actually, I have the original LP & the same complaint as Vvrinc. It is not AS bad on my system (not that it's good -- by ANY stretch of the imagination!). There is a strange difference between the left hand & the right, as if they were rec...
Speaker specs: Sensitivity, & Amp match
Newbee: the difference lies in what you're measuring. If it's sound PRESSURE, 6db means "double" {20log10(p1/p2)=db}. When it comes to watts, 3db difference means double (or half, as it were).Minimum "perceptible" diference in spl has been said to...
Speaker specs: Sensitivity, & Amp match
S7horton is correct:)! 6db (spl) *is* "twice". Elevick: You show this yourself quite explicitly, above: As change in spl relates to w change^2, 2x as loud requires 2^2=4x watts. Every 6 db you clearly show x4 watts. Cheers!
Are my speakers supposed to do this?
When I first put the Minimax preamp into my system there was a very loud hum and some static pops coming through the speakersAmazing that the pre tested OK. Re, testing: Rather than the speakers, shouldn't you be sending the amps for a check-up??
$1130 system for a musician, please :
radum -- give some thought to Audiokinesis suggestions. If you use acoustic instruments, you'll like either system. You'll also like the Reynauds Metralla mentioned above.
$4000 to spend on a SS power amp - help me choose
In your case, I would definitely go for active bi-amping and keep the Graaf for the mid-hi. In that case, you'll need an SS that typically has a hefty PS and is stable into low loads -- but you certainly don't need a new, giga$ powerhouse, that's ...
hi-end universal players?
I'd be happy with an EMM labs universal dac. But I can't afford it!Re mainstream players, I heard a Denon multiplayer (211?? something like that) that was reasonably good on cd -- that is, it offers detail but is a bit compressed dynamically compa...
Wilson WP 7 and ATC SCM150ASL
I have (listening experience, that is) and much prefer the ATC. As to whether it's a more "accurate" speaker... if that means, flatter response, less phase anomalies, more extended freq. response, less distortion, more detail, etc, I can only say ...
symphonic Line RG4 III vs RG4 IV?
Hassel, the thread refers to the RG4 -- mono power amps. The 14 is an integrated. As to the rest, I must have been misinformed! Cheers
To preamp or not to preamp?
IMO, doing away with the active pre will be beneficial (unless you go for a giga$ active device).HOWEVER, there are two considerations if you bypass the active pre:1) the quality of the attenuator /volume pot (whether it's the cd/dvd's or a stand ...
symphonic Line RG4 III vs RG4 IV?
Hi George -- the Magellan i listened to were privately owned; I happened to drop in while an audition for electronics was taking place, was kindly asked to stay a bit -- and... I ended up leaving hours later! It's amazing that the guy actually mov...
Does 1/2" make a difference at 375 Hz ?
7 ohms dc indicates a nominal impedance of +8ohms, i.e. a somewhat easier load than the 6,5 drivers. If the coil were shorted, you'd have a much lower resistance reading
Upgrading the Source.
As you're looking at redbook only, I would search for a small local (CDN) manufacturer of cdp. (there are some such, but I can't remember them -- maybe UHF can help.) Such a product should be well designed and offer very good sound cheaper than a ...

lovely vocals, dynamics, detail, air, and bass. i want more of it allAs presented, there seem two hardware solutions:*A better phono stage -- an expensive proposition UNLESS you go diy (or find someone to build one for you from a kit)*Tweaking the...
