Does anyone care to ask an amplifier designer a technical question? My door is open.
I’ve tried a dozen 6SN7s for my amps’ cathode followers. What a huge range of sound characteristics. The worst (thinnest, brightest) were Russian 80s or 90s ones under the Sovtek label, which looked identical to the Counterpoint branded ones and an...
Turntable got absolutely crushed by CD
iamhe I’ve read that the analog LP only captures 12 or 14 bits of information but in pure wave form. Digital captures sound at different bits and depth. Somehow, they both sound natural and high resolution on my system and some of my friends syste...
Turntable got absolutely crushed by CD
Elizabeth, I have 7,000 78s and about 1,500 CDs from 78 sources.  They sound great performance wise and often with great mid-range and dynamics (especially the electricals).  For 78s, I use my old VPI 19-4 with an ultracraft 400C arm and a grado 7...

That's interesting information concerning the 6SN7 tube.  My power amps use them (NOS 1948 Raytheons) as cathode followers and the 6CG7 as a pair as input tubes. Now if the 6SN7 is not really a good audio tube, why does VAC use it on the entire lin...

Thanks for answering me. I noticed that the continuous bias VAC 200IQ sounds better than the manual bias predecessor Phi-200. The improvement is claimed on the continuous bias. I also own a backup amp, the 70 watt EAR 890 which runs really hot in ...
New Tweak --- Its Fantastic
Will you get to audition The Gate, more powerful than 100 to 200 E-Mats?
Perfect Path Technologies: Omega E mat
Let’s figure 100 E-Mats at $600/ea That totals $60,000 So this The Gate could be priced at $15,000 and save space and $45,000. I’m not that well heeled to afford this tweak. On the other hand, if it were reasonably priced at $5,000, PP wouldn’t be...
Any Members Tried the Audio Interface CST-80 SUT?
Your SUT is less expensive than the AIs available on ebay.   My friend is anxiously looking for an AI but at under $500 for the L (low output version).  Thanks so much.P.S. Do you have an opinion concerning the Zesto 10 impedance/4 output level ...

Funny that the latest ARC amps I've heard sound greyish, muted dynamics, etc.  My friend has an ARC 75 which is no match for his Classic 60s or my voltage regulated amps.  Worse, his amps, Ref 5 preamp and $10K CD player all have had significant b...

Hello Roger, I've purchased your tubes several decades and liked the quality and longetivity.  Funny how people denigrate my Marantz 7T although I only use it for 78 rpm phono stage.  It sounds much like a 7C.My Dynaco ST70 on my second system has...
Discontinued equipment that you wish were still here. What do you miss or think will miss?

Tonearms: Ripoff?
edgewear - I've heard modified Denon 103s sound superb when properly loaded and on a matching tonearm.  It isn't a turd in my friends system.  Perla Audio has an engineer who does a fantastic job modifying the cartridge for a low price.  I've hear...
The nightmare of the cartridge buyer...
That is why when my Benz Ruby 3 goes down due to a worn stylus I won't rebuild it at Soundsmith.  Friends have informed me that the cartridge I get back won't be the same, probably worse sounding, azimuth off, different stylus shape, etc. However, ...
The nightmare of the cartridge buyer...
Cardas still sells the Benz Ruby (don't know which version) as a Cardas Myrtle Heart and Cardas Silver Heart cartridge on their website http://cardas.com/cartridge.php   These are new cartridges.  I really like my Benz Ruby 3 because it balances t...
The nightmare of the cartridge buyer...
Chakster - I use a 12 year old Benz Ruby 3.  Is that considered a vintage cartridge today?  I had a Dynavector Ruby 23r back in its day.  It was both relatively neutral and erred on the warm side (but I really liked it).  Then I got the original K...
