Tube rolling for EAR 912
I have an EAR Acute which I use large O getter late 1950s Amperex.  They are superior to many of the more modern tubes I've tried (about 15 pairs).  Also, my older EAR 864 line stage sounded dull compared to the Mullard 12AX7 CV4004 and cleartop R...

My good friend Mr. Record contends that the 3012R is one of the finest tonearms he has ever heard (he hasn't heard the SAT or Thales though).  He also says that the common 3009 is not a very good arm for high end use.  Another high end tonearm whi...
Best Loudspeakers for Rich Timbre?
I agree with helomech.  Paper & pulp cones may breakup smoothly relative to rigid/metal cones.  I didn't know that paper & pulp cones had a limited bandwith.  Many full range and coincident cone speakers use paper & pulp cones.

I've noted that the SME IV can be improved upon with new wiring and armtube foam resonance control.  It is extremely likely that the SME 3012R can also be improved, particularly in it's wiring.  Stock SME wiring was "crap" in its day.  Add was the...

downunder - That's one solid and serious table.  Did the guy have two SATs for stereo and mono?

I forgot to mention that Brooks Berdan replaced the tonearm cable with a Cardas tonearm cable to RCA box out and installed a closed foam shot into the armtube to eliminate the lower mid/upper bass hump present in the SME IV.  My arm is thus modifi...

lewm It is common knowledge that children with bronchial diseases often have the ability (or disability) to hear very high frequencies. Hearing sounds from 20-30Khz was an annoyance when I was young. It may have helped to preserve my high frequenc...

My friend with the Caliburn/Cobra/Kiseki purchased it based on MF reviews. That was probably his best purchase in an $850K system. He also bought Ypsilon pre-amp and phono pre based on MF recommendation. Not a wise choice there (pre-amp is terribl...

With 25,000+ LPs, the cost of playing them in high fidelity is going to cost $1000s.  How many $1000s depends on the fidelity quality.  When I was a teenager, it was about $500.  In my 20s it was about $1500, In my 30's it went up to $4000 (VPI 19...

I have heard the Caliburn/Cobra combination many times as well as many other high ends designs. The Cobra and Graham Phantom Elite I’ve heard costs $12-13K. I’ve been using an SME IV for 29 years. I’d like to hear a Thales Simplicity II tangential...
Do speaker cables need a burn in period?
stevecharm - What makes you such an expert?  I've been a beta tester for cables for two decades and have had at my disposal a dozen major manufacturers cables to compare.  You are correct only if comparing cables which do not have great resolution...
Do speaker cables need a burn in period?
There are two impartial listeners as a beta tester for GroverHuffman cables.  One is his wife and one is my wife, who doesn't care at all what wire is used or scientific analysis of it.  They only compare wire as to whether they hear a difference ...
Perfect Path Technologies: Omega E mat
Wow, I did not have your experience.  I installed six and after one day, the system sounded great.  It sounded better as soon as I put the first six in.  Installing the last three of 12, one per day, gave me diminished sound for less than a day.  ...

I had to reread the forum question.  I do not personally know the character of any of my favorite female singers that I could make an assertion that any one of them could be my lifetime mate.  I chose Claudia Muzio for her public attributes.  I li...
Do speaker cables need a burn in period?
pcrhkr  If you think I am out of my mind for believing cables require burn in (some more, some less), look at yourself first!  Big expert you are. I've had 20+ years experience as a beta tester for a cable manufacturer (high end cables).  Maybe Be...
