Speakers and air-conditioning
Maybe connection problems/inadvertent multiple clicks. Not *that* annoying.
Good optical cable

Which used speakers in the 5K range?
I am very happy with my Tannoy Turnberry SE. The Prestige series dual concentrics produce a unique and very realistic tone and timbre that I've not heard matched by any other speakers, period, along with fantastic coherence and a huge, deep sound....
Mini Monitors under $500 used
ACI Sapphire III or Anniversary if you can find a good deal. I thought my old Sonus Faber Concertinos sounded good but the Sapphire III were much better.
USB DAC/Preamp Suggestions $1k to $2k
Ah, missed the part about the analong inputs. The Bel Canto DAC2.5 has those. Analog volume control will be very difficult to find, though. To me there's nothing wrong with a good digital attenuator. Bel Canto and Berkeley do it well from my exper...
Recommended USB- SPDIF converter for Metrum Octave
Oddly enough I had the opposite experience as Elberoth2...I had the AP2 for about 3 days before I sold it. It sounded hard and fatiguing in the upper midrange/lower treble with slightly compressed imaging, though it did offer noticeably more detai...
USB DAC/Preamp Suggestions $1k to $2k
Bel Canto DAC3 is full featured and sounds fantastic IMO. Very detailed, precise, and incisive, yet liquid and very musical with a touch of warmth.
Pass Aleph 5 vs. Pass XA 30.5 / 60.5
I've owned the Aleph 3 and 30 and XA 30.5. To my ears there is no comparison -- the 30.5 far outclassed both Alephs.
dacs as preamps ?
Generally yes, a preamp in the chain is much better... but I am mightily impressed by the implementation in the Berkeley Alpha DAC.
Headphones? Anyone?
Do you like the Grado sound? I have SR-225is and they get fatiguing pretty quickly for me. I find the treble and overall presentation is too forward, though not piercingly bright. I much prefer Sennheiser HD-600s. The sound is darker with more bal...
For money Quality which is better arcam or NAD?
I have owned the NAD C340 and C350 and also the Arcam Delta 290 and preferred the Arcam. Contrary to Ryder's experience I found the Arcam to have more depth as well as a smoother, sweeter sound. The NADs were enjoyable as well (the C350 more so) b...
Who here uses Von Gaylord amps or other gear?
I just upgraded most of my cables from the Chinchilla to the Legend 7000s including interconnects from DAC to pre and pre to amps + power cords on the DAC and preamp -- still running the amps with Chinchilla. WOW, a substantial improvement where I...
Review: Berkeley Audio Design Alpha DAC Series 2 DA converter
Interesting. What did you feel was lacking and what have you found that satisfies you? What is your type of sound? I take it you're not turntable guy? I think this is not an exciting DAC that reaches out and grabs your attention. Definitely on the...
Pass Labs Aleph 3: The best sounding amp ever
I had the Aleph 3 and think the Aleph 30 is considerably better in terms of realistic presence, dynamics, grunt, and soundstage while just a touch less sweet.I've owned several Tripath and ICEpower amps, most significant of which was the Bel Canto...
