Hafler DH500
Something did just occur to me. These older amps often benefit a great deal from re-capping. However, in practice most people recap, like the changes, and then end up selling the amp anyway. :) Best,E
How much do I need to spend to get a preamp that sounds better than no preamp?
I should point out that this idea of taste applies only when we're talking about reasonably well matched impedances. If you have a low impedance amplifier input a preamp may indeed be needed. However given the modern high-current op amps in most DA...

Why do you need 500 Watts? I can think of a number of sub-500 watt amplifiers which would sound magnificent. Hafler amps often sounded under powered to my ear, if that's how you are basing your needs, Bryston, Parasound, and older CJ amps would to...

Um, this is very very much a matter of personal taste. I don't think no preamp is necessarily the golden standard. I buy for pleasure, not specs or measurements.Sometimes a juicy, colorful preamp can be fun as hell. :) Best,E
Is the 2.5 way speaker the ideal home speaker?
@timlub Everything that Erik has quoted throughout this thread is correct. Thank you kindly. @marqmike This has been a great thread for me to understand a little bit better about something I enjoy. Thanks Eric for the thread Glad to be of servic...
Going Back To A Bi-Amp Setup...Need Advice
The issue with the Schiit passive is the (relatively) low impedance, only 10 kOhms. Put in parallel with say, 20kOhms of another device and you are looking at a very low impedance. If you were running a solid state preamp with 2 outputs, no proble...
Folded tweeters vs. dome?
Hi Tute! The Triton one's are awful. My main speakers use hyper-expensiv Mundorf AMT's and they are superb. I do not know if it is the quality of the tuning, but the Tritons were so terrible I never ever listened to another GE speaker again. Best,E
New system!
Glad you found what you needed. If you haven't already, I strongly suggest you talk to GIK Acoustics to help you with your room. Great products, inexpensive and high value.Best,E

Helo - I can't disagree with you in terms of the voice, but I will say, I just haven't found the upper crossover point to be a really clear indicator of performance either way.
Going Back To A Bi-Amp Setup...Need Advice
If you are using solid state preamp that should work fine. An alternative arrangement, much more complicated, is to use a miniDSP for level and bass EQ. Best,E
Is the 2.5 way speaker the ideal home speaker?
Be careful reading that. There is a significant difference between the fundamental and the range. The fundamentals are the bottom, pure note. But the range is far higher.
Is the 2.5 way speaker the ideal home speaker?
@kijanki - This is probably not for you, but here is a very different type of speaker that has a lot of fans. The Seas A26. 2-way with a 10" mid-woofer and single capacitor crossover (6db/Octave):https://www.madisoundspeakerstore.com/2-way-speaker...

1. Isn’t crossing at 2kHz or lower in the range of female voice, that has fundamentals between 350Hz and 3kHz? I refer you to wikipedia on this:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voice_frequency 2. Isn’t crossing below 2kHz to close to resonance of...
Next step: tube preamp or analog?
Room acoustics??
Is the 2.5 way speaker the ideal home speaker?
I tend to crossover at 2 kHz or slightly lower since I have only really made 2-ways so far, and don't have an issue with any coherency. One pair sits on my desktop. The near field listening is a real treat given my living room is an acoustic mess.
