headphones-amp combination
I find Fiio to be an excellent, reliable value for portables. The big issue I have is that I use hard to drive Sure E4C IEMs or AKG 7xx headphones so I can't skimp on overall drive power. They both benefit from a stiff amp.

@bondmanp I think you are quite possibly right in most respects, that is, that the back of the drivers are being used, and the front are feeding into the tube which is then either an acoustic suspension of tapered transmission line. However, the "b...
Turning the volume up
Maggie,Nope. Elizabeth is referring to what "full range output" means. That is, the maximum output from a CD player via fixed RCA outputs was decided to be 2V.More here:http://www.lavryengineering.com/wiki/index.php/Line_levelBest,E
When making DIY power cable for an amp, do you:
IF you are creating a 3 pin, grounded power cord THEN you MUST connect all three at both ends. The center pin on both ends is ground, but the small blade is "hot" and should be properly attached at both ends of the IEC plugs. This is because typic...
Which material sounds better for speakers construction? Wood, Ply or MDF?
buki is exactly on point here:Here is what I would say about that. How many CONCERT level instruments are made out of plywood or MDF?Since I listen to mainly jazz vocalists my speakers are made mainly of deceased jazz vocalists. You would not beli...
Best Speakers for Very Large Bright Room
Room correction is a pale pale solution here, and I'm a big EQ/DSP fan. It works much better in conjunction with decent room acoustics. A carpet and ceiling treatments, bass traps, anything, will help that work much much better. Best,E

+1 dweller Dipoles and open baffle speakers in general are also a good choice. Emerald Physics is a good brand that comes to mind if you want something besides an ESL. Best,E

Your choices are (always):1 - Control dispersion 2 - Control room acousticsIf you are unwilling to do anything in 2, consider an ESL or horn loaded speaker. The center issue is a little about your head though. Your head tends to cancel frequencies...
soundstage location~speaker plane; speaker design or placement?
Look up "Head related transfer function" or HRTF for a more complete explanation.Partly this is timber. An upper midrange emphasis may make the soundstage appear closer to you. I use a very relaxed, sloping off curve that sometimes make it seem as...

I would never allow such a privacy invading product in my house. I barely tolerate a Nest thermostat.

In terms of using plumbing for speakers, I think the venerable Seigfreid Linkwitz has everyone beat with his LX mini:http://www.linkwitzlab.com/Store/LXmini.htm

@ebm What great speakers do you have?Good luck in this great hobby.I design my own. Here is what I’m listening to now. The tweeter is the same as used in some Gryphon designs, the mid-woofer I’ve seen in Wilson and other speakers:https://speakerma...

I'm really not sure what is going on with the mid-woofers. It looks like they actually are direct-radiating, and the tube is acting as a sealed cabinet, no? I can't find anything about the cost. Anyone else have luck? Best,E
Replacing my Krell FPB 600 amp with a tube amp
So here is my bad take, overall. The Krell's that I remember in the day of the B&W Nautilus were cold and analytical as hell. Having heard the top of the line, 5 amplifier setup with Krell crossover and B&W Nautilus speakers I was never wo...

@ebm The A1 is a much much better value and realistic speaker to live with than the S1 Mk II , so I'm not surprised. Important to note, that it's easy to make fewer speakers than you think you will sell, so you can later announce you are sold out!...
