IM Distortion, Speakers and the Death of Science
OK, I’ve briefly read the AES papers. So Duke proposes a way of modelling systems so that multiple non-linear behaviors can be amalgamated at once, and then comparing that to what is known about auditory masking perception, further he’s actually t...
IM Distortion, Speakers and the Death of Science
I am, however, puzzled by your seeming dismissal of the one thing mentioned here that seems to represent progress along those lines, the GedLee Metric mentioned by @audiokinesis. I didn't dismiss it, I also did not address it. He wrote: A met...
Teflon Cap upgrade or new set of NOS tubes for conrad johnson PV12A Preamp?
Depends how cheap the teflon is. There's a wide variety of caps out there though.  I might suggest a compromise, try out some Audyn TC bypass caps, in the 0.1 to 1uF range. They're pretty big, so you may have to go small, but less expensive than p...
Fritz LS 7: Better than WaveTouch Antero?
OP:Sorry, I'd let you know if I had.  I'm not going to claim expertise with something I've never even seen in real life. :) Best,E
IM Distortion, Speakers and the Death of Science
What specification would tell you that most amps sound better driving an easy load than they do putting out the additional power? This at least has some measurements, Steroephile routinely publishes power vs. load and frequency response vs. a ...
Krell 4K Processor sounds like the guts have been pulled out
Oh, right, disable all EQ functions is always a good test. :)
Fritz LS 7: Better than WaveTouch Antero?
The driver package in the LS 7 is really amazing. I consider the mid-woofer among the very best sounding in the world.  I have never heard the soft dome, but it comes from a great pedigree.
IM Distortion, Speakers and the Death of Science
@heaudio123With all the advancements in compute, storage and data collection technology you'd think we could see many more dynamic tests being done, but in fact they are quite rare. Best,E
IM Distortion, Speakers and the Death of Science
@audiokinesis The point was that we talk about a handful of measurements as if they were all we needed and all we should ever have, and we call this science. It isn’t. It’s not science unless we are getting better and better at inventing measureme...
IM Distortion, Speakers and the Death of Science
I never said measurements were arbitrary:https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/arbitraryI said they are created by necessity to meet a specific need, as opposed to measuring everything humans can hear in all cases. To reiterate: What is my po...
New Yamaha integrated amps
One of the best features the Yammies had, IMHO, was the continuously variable loudness control. Shame that doesn't carry over to the top model.
Fritz LS 7: Better than WaveTouch Antero?
You know, OP, you should just ask if Fritz will send you 2 models at the same time. I bet he would work something out for you. Erik
IM Distortion, Speakers and the Death of Science
Duke:@audiokinesis Don’t focus on distortion. Focus on us in consumer land (albeit educated consumer) having a limited number of measures and assuming we can’t have or use more. Here I don't care about distortion, I used it as an example of how we...
IM Distortion, Speakers and the Death of Science
@cleeds - I'm talking about what we, the moderately informed consumer perceives. Clearly, R&D proceeds and AES continues to publish. Hence my clear caveat: "for the consumers" meaning what we read about and discuss.
My Ayre AX-7e Integrated amp vs. an upgrade to the Ayre EX-8 Integrated amplifier
Based on the literature, the Ax-7 is 70W at idle, vs. 60W for the Ex-8, so it should be the other way around.
