Ayre MX R vs Pass Labs X350.8
I love Ayre, but it sounds like you'd be happier with the Pass. :) I think you need to listen for yourself though, I don't think it's that close a call, you'll find your favorite quickly. Best,Erik
looking for ideas on a tube pre amp
Personally, I'd keep the JC2 and change the tweeter caps on the Focal to Mundorf MKP's or Supreme's. Still..... ARC is an interesting perspective.  Their new stuff isn't like their old stuff. If you are looking for a more mellow presentation, the ...
remove tubes before moving cross town?
Depends.  If it was going in my car, and it would, no. :) If you were going to have to give them to others to drive along with everything else, I would consider it. Tubes are sturdier than you'd think though, they were flying in airplane radios lo...
DACs and audio formats
Upsampling and oversampling are optional. A DAC that handles 24/96 means it can handle that signal natively. This is something you would get by buying high resolution music or listening to a high res station like Toronto Jazz 91, or by upsampling ...

What to buy....Auralic Aries, Sony Hap-ZES, or Auralic Altair?
Some one on audiogon is selling NOS Squeezebox players for a song. :)
Loudspeakers have we really made that much progress since the 1930s?
I think if we go from one type of technology to another, it's impossible to say things got better or worse.  If you want to talk giant auditorium speakers as the "standard of 1930's" then we have to compare them to the current giant theater speake...
Acoustic Treatment of 'Unique" Room
Hi Ih!Bass traps enable DSP, so if you've added their bass traps, especially their soffit traps you should be able to EQ your way to nirvana now. :)  miniDSP has a digital-only model that sits before your DAC, under $200. Best,Erik
Subwoofer is too loud with gain all the way down
Ahh,  I see there's a little confusion. An integrated amplifier includes a preamplifier. The Emotiva A100 is a stereo amplifier, with a volume control.  If it included source switching it would be a true integrated.  So no, it's not common for a p...
Any actual use of Pono Player through balanced connection into home stereo?
Hi WCC,Without a doubt, as a portable player, the Pono is the very best sounding unit I've heard. Not just the quality of the sound but the consistency with different headphones. HOWEVER! It doesn't stream, at all.  The only way to get music into ...
Loudspeakers have we really made that much progress since the 1930s?
Well, efficiency without resorting to an electromagnet based speaker is one big issue compared to that design! :) Unplug them from the wall outlet and they are mute. Horns themselves have improved quite a bit in terms of distortion, extension and ...
Subwoofer is too loud with gain all the way down
Hi Sean! That’s pretty weird. It’s a pretty weird set up and it’s odd you can’t get less gain. Are you really saying it’s too loud, or just boomy at some frequencies? Can you help me out a little bit and explain why you have an integrated amp and a...
how do you record audible sound, and play it back as infrasound ?
If this was on a file, you could use sox on Linux. It may even be able to use sox in streaming mode. Best,Erik
Any actual use of Pono Player through balanced connection into home stereo?
I have not used the balanced outputs, except briefly at a demo. To my ears the Pono sounds a lot like the Ayre preamp and CD player, if that helps.  If you like that sound, you'll like the Pono. Best,Erik
Strange Oscillation
Interesting. One thing to do is to try it with the speakers disconnected.  Play through the piece, in a manner you are sure creates the problem, then connect the speakers.  Is the oscillation there? If so it's entirely electronic.  If not, it's el...
