Aurum Cantus ....anyone heard them?
Aurum is making them for Red Rose also. However, I do believe that Levenson is rewiring them and putting in his own crossovers. The drivers and cabinets should be the same. You can find them for around $450. Maybe less if you want to cover shippin...
Thiel 1.5's vs, 2.2's? Any thoughts?
The 2.2's will probably give more bass due to the size. However, the 2.2's are more demanding on your amp. The bigger the thiel, the lower the impedance drops!
Has anyone tried the XM radio with Toslink?
It is still compressed audio and won't sound any better than MP3's. Even with a good DAC, it won't get close to a decent cd player.
Shigaraki and other simplistic gear
To cause more trouble, how about getting rid of the Fostex for a pair of Jordan drivers that 47 labs uses? They are less efficient but a more flat response. They do roll off considerably above 15khz.
Small size tube amps...any recommendations??
I agree, the EL84 that you are probably referring to sounds great. Many vintage Pilot, Heath, Fisher, Scott and more used this tube. Very sweet and warm sounding. From what I know, Decware mentioned above uses a Sovtek CV83-not the same. Decware i...
Driver suggestions for DIY project
Try EJ Jordan drivers (FX92? I think is the model). Jordan drivers are similar to Fostex and Lowther but for much less money and no 1000hz hump like lowthers. The are not as efficient as lowthers but still pretty good. Range is essentially 100hz t...
Subwoofer Amp Recommendations
Cheap older amps simply won't cut it! Buy a pair of Janis 1/a's on ebay for $350/pair. Only 100 watts but clean and powerful down to the last octave. Your old carver will just muddy up things in the upper bass region and never get down to the 20-5...
SOTA vs. Rega, VPI, Music Hall, Clearaudio
I love my sota! Simple, clean and quiet. Anything can be upgraded but why bother unless you don't like it-so, try it first.
Suggestions for someone who wants to get in tubes
What gear do you have now? The first couple of suggestions are great but it depends on what you have now. How efficient are your speakers? The more efficient, the more choices you will have.I don't recommend starting with an integrated because upg...
amp upgrade
Aren't totem's fairly inefficient? Shouldn't you consider more wattage than the creek?
Coincident speaker cable experience
Besides the money, I can't/won't wait 200 to 300 hours for them to break in!
What small HT speakers to buy?
Contact Walter at underwoodhifi.com. He's giving great deals on Soliloquy. The Sat-5 can be wall mounted and has the same tweeter as their $2500 big brothers. I just got 4 Sat-5's (right, left & 2 for center) and will be getting one more pair ...
What can i do to make my tube preamp sound warmer?
Changing your 12ax7A's to warmer ones may help-what do you have now? I would say that amperex tend to be a little warm for me may just take the bite out of them?
Audiophile "PA" System??
If you are setting up a gym, why not add to the construction and put in a bunch of ceiling speakers? One nice amp/receiver with a 6-12 speaker selector (Niles?) would do great. You could have a built in sub to handle all of the bass. It may save y...
Whats the tubiest sounding preap?
I have always liked sumo, threshold and belles. Classe is fairly warm and can be had with a remote.
