Inactive speakers in the room...any effect?
Believers...What you are saying is that a "room treatment" device having only about 1/2 square foot of active area has a significant effect. If this is so, why don't the room treatment merchants design a box with a passive radiator (or an active d...
The absolute best and worst-sounding CD you own ?
Spatial quality of the recording is very important, particularly for multichannel stuff, where it central to the purpose of the disc. I will compare two Multichannel discs, one a Sony Classical SACD of violinist Hillary Hahn playing a concerto, an...

Balanced connection/amplification for phono?
Is there a problem with single-ended phono pickup connection? Not that I know of. Why solve a problem that doesn't exist? (Well I guess it's just for fun). The floating vs balanced thing did occur to me, but if you tie together two of the four pick...
Aragon 4004 mk2 vs Adcom 555 mk2
If the toroidal transformers are stacked that could explain the disagreement. By the way, think that the Aragon amp costs more than twice the Adcom price, so it ought to be better. My Adcom 5503 (like a 5500 but with three channels) is hooked up to...
Aragon 4004 mk2 vs Adcom 555 mk2
Kool39...The photo I saw of a for sale 4004 showed one toroidal transformer. Pop the cover and take a look, or admit it doesn't matter :)
Balanced connection/amplification for phono?
For a wire run as short as that between the phono pickup and the preamp the benefits of balanced lines would not be significant. Microphones have low level output, like phono pickups, but are often used with very long cables, and I bet that some m...
How important is the driver tube in a tubed amp?
BTWI (Before Transistors Were Invented) we ran output tube until they glowed brightly and pulsated with the music. However, input (gain) stage tubes, and to a lesser extent the driver/inverter tubes we replaced from time to time to maintain sonic ...
Newb - damaged cartridge?
And furthermore...if the stylus is user-replaceable it can be removed while you are doing dangerous things like mounting the pickup in an arm.I did enjoy my Ortofon, but now I have a Shure, and I don't look back.
DVD-A player that'll output 24/96 digital signal
Why not just get a player with a good D/A? Good D/A's are no longer uncommon. The need for outboard D/A's is fast disapearing.
Newb - damaged cartridge?
This is the kind of thing that makes a user-replaceable stylus attractive. My kids did it to me.
Consumer Electronics Show,8-12 Jan. 2004 Las Vegas
It's worth doing once in your life. Probably not again unless you are in the industry.
Questions about Toslink's
Sean...May I remind you that in the digital world a little signal loss, or distortion, is no big deal. The "ones", so long as the receiver can still recognize them, don't become 0.47's. Also, any "switch" is going to have loss. Two fiber terminati...
Aragon 4004 mk2 vs Adcom 555 mk2
Aball...What do you know about the Carver 1600? Its distortion specs are quite respectable, especially when measured well below the 600 watt level, which, of course, is where it will operate. I have not seen anything but good words about this amp,...
Aragon 4004 mk2 vs Adcom 555 mk2
Aball and Kool139....I think that this FAQ writeup from Adcom, who uses both mosfets and bipolar output devices is a fair description.QUOTEMy amplifier seems to run hot. Is this a problem? Probably not. Most Adcom amplifiers use output devices ca...
