Suggestions for someone who wants to get in tubes Get a tube preamp. Forget the power amp and speakers for now. Tube circuitry is well suited for low level signals. Power amplification with tubes is an uphill battle vs SS. Not saying it can't be done but it is difficult and therefore expensive.
Recapping amps Sean's advice is good...Two additional points from my experience.1. After waiting for the power supply capacitors to discharge, before you touch anything short the capacitors with your screwdriver. It there is still juice there it's better to put ...
Class A multi-channel amp? Sean...Digital amps (like the Carvers I just bought) are often described as having Class A, and Tube amp sonic characteristics. What is the basis for this? Perhaps the characteristic spectrum of harmonic distortion is similar. I am at the boundry ...
SACD Opinions: Gimmick? Like it? Don't? Why? Sean...If you can tolerate Bach, try the multichannel Sony SACD SS87983, E Power Biggs playing Toccatas and Fugues using the four organs installed in the cathedral of Freiburg. The multichannel aspect of this recording is not a creation of the rec...
Carver Pro ZR1600 Sean...About the Carver Pro line of products being unrelated to Bob..yes I heard that. For what it's worth, the amps have a "made in USA" label on them, which makes them sound just a little bit better. This Phoenix Gold outfit confuses the hell ou...
Regarding 78's Sometimes when listening to classic recordings from the 78 age, a little surface noise just adds to the authenticity of the experience. I have Benny Goodman recordings that were made from "Air Checks" of his AM radio broadcasts. These are some of ...
SACD Opinions: Gimmick? Like it? Don't? Why? I am on my second universal player, Denon 2900 following a Pioneer DV45A. With the Pioneer, both SACD and DVD-A were superior to CD, with the caution that all media are strongly impacted by the audio quality of the particular disc. However, I foun...
Class A multi-channel amp? Why? Do you need to heat your house? Or maybe build up your biceps.Seriously, putting even two Class A amps on a single chassis doesn't make sense.
Discontinued components that you wish the manufact DBX LPs, and the processor required to play them. This would make vinyl really live up to all the hype you see on this site.
To Biwire or not to biwire Of course I meant "bi-wire" not 'bi-amp" (although I do that also). For some reason I can't find the option that allows one to correct a posting.
To Biwire or not to biwire I have identified one theoretical reason why biwire may be helpful, Forget about the Hot speaker wire: look at the return. The return terminals of the woofer and tweeter are tied together, and then returned to ground through the non-zero impedance...
EL 34 based amplifier recommendations As I recall from long ago, EL34's were used in amps of 40 watts or less. (I had a 35 wpc Eico that used them). If you want 150 watts, I think you are into multiple pairs of KT-88, or the like.
Aragon 4004 mk2 vs Adcom 555 mk2 You probably have less problems with feedback phasing around one stage (local) than across the entire circuit. So in the real world, local feedback may be less problematical than global feedback, even if the net total dB is the same. In an ideal w...
Surround Channel Speaker Recommendations For movies you can probably make just about anything work. However if you are interested in high quality multichannel music, identical speakers/amps are important for best results. The official multichannel party line is that dipole speakers are a ...
Aragon 4004 mk2 vs Adcom 555 mk2 If the feedback signal were perfect with regard to gain and phase it could only improve the overall performance of the amp. High amounts of feedback become a problem when the feedback is less than perfect, either because of circuit design or real-... |
