New Transport Approach
Great idea! Have you estimated the build of materials cost? I know of a couple of high end manufacturers that offer cd players which retail for $2500.00. Their total build of material cost is about $600.00. This example should help you calculate a...
Can upsamplers alter a CD's sonic performance?
Everyone who comes to this post needs to read Megasam's response. As he stated; with upsampling, noise artifacts can be removed easier without harming the signal. This is very simple and straight forward explanation to why upsampling can potential...
How to get more air in the speakers
Another possible cause to the "loss of air" in the highs may be found in your digital front end. The ambience cues (or "air") can be easily lost at the digital source, and no speaker itself can help recover something that isn't there in the first ...
Best A/V Receiver Under 700
The Outlaw takes my vote, and it has been reduced in price to $499 direct! I suggest ordering one, and trying out for the 30 day trial. I bet you won't return it. I kept mine after I compared it to a $700 Sony, and a $825 Yamaha. It beat them both...
What are the best CD-changers?
I totaly agree with sugarbrie's advice. I personally know six audiophiles (plus myself) that have systems that cost over $10k, which use the Awia transport/ MSB (modified) set-up. Its really that good!
home theater for 3000
Start with the Outlaw receiver, which now costs just $499 direct. It performs better than many $1000 Japanese A/V recievers, and will allow you to spend the rest of your budget on better speakers, sub, etc...
What's the problem with Sony 777ES SACD?
Many audiophiles have discovered (unfortunately) that all is not well in SACD land. The problem is two-fold. Firstly, Sony (like all Japanese digital player manufacturers) use very mediocre sounding output devices, which greatly hinder the true so...
Headphones
I just bought a pair of Sennheiser 600's last week for $250.00 new from hififorless! I compared them directly to my Grado 200's (now discontined, close in sound to the hp-2's). The Sennheiser's are very sweet sounding in the top end, and are way l...
Advice on a speaker system
Please define what you consider ""best". In a combo surround/two channel system, there are many tradeoffs to make. Is two channel sound reproduction your most important priority, or is it the surround sound potential? Do you favor detail and ultra...
Sony 9000ES: DanWright or StanWarren Mod
Clarification: I should have stated: " Stan Warren's output stage offers unparralled sonic and electrical performance, as compared to ANY "drop in" replacement, that is available to the other modifiers. This makes his gain stage very esoteric inde...
Sony 9000ES: DanWright or StanWarren Mod
As an Electrical Engineer myself, I can attest to Stan Warren's abilities. He is the only, and I mean only modifier, that is offering a custom designed ,proprietary output stage, that is world class by any standard, in the audio world today. There ...
Cheap transport ??
If you are using a dac that has 24/96 delta sigma converters (like the MSB or Bel Canto), then there is a clear and solid choice. It is the Aiwa 5 disc player, that is sold at Best Buy for under $100!This player is an engineering anomoly, that sho...
Any advise to improve my system
I also agree with the other posts; your speakers are definately your weakest link. The ironic thing about this, is how well you've managed to assemble a world class system otherwise. I strongly feel that you have two other areas to address, which ...
Stan Warren mod Aiwa xc37m CD transport
I am using the link DAC, with Stan's best mods of course.
Stereophile's refusal to review more low
Everyone who reads Sterophile, do yourself a favor: Don't ever look to Sterophile as a source for great bang for the buck components or speakers. The reviewers really don't have the exposure or experience with much of the budget market. Additional...
