Did anyone had problems with wooden boxes shipment
Looks like it only affects stuff going to europe. Same wankers that probably mandated the retard-proof binding posts mandated this. Solution: simply don't ship to Europe. ;-) Or at least not in wood boxes/pallets.-Ed
Next Generation SACD Players
One to watch might be the new Teac (DV-50?). Lindemann: nice, overpriced though. Some of the best players continue to be the 1st and 2nd generation ones: SCD-1 (and 777ES) at the top of the heap I think, S9000ES also very good, among others. Music...
Conrad-Johnson Premier 5 power amps
George is right on the value. Original retail was $7500/pair, they were the top of the CJ lineup, HP (of TAS fame) had a pair in his reference system for a while. Great amps, 200wpc. Conradjohnson.com has some info, in their 'classic products' sec...
Telefunken vs Siemens EL34
They are definitely different, both in sound and construction. Tubeworld.com has some pictures. I have a pair of the "round hole in plate/wings" version, NOS factory matched, that are available. IMHO the rarest and best of the breed of German EL34...
Meitner DAC 6-Roll call
I don't have it, but have heard it on several occasions. The fellow I got my SCD-1 from (Tom Jung, DMP records) has one and uses it (DAC-8) in his mastering suite. A nice setup to be sure. (Great guy too). He posts things for sale here, not sure i...
musical fidelity trivista sacd player
Agreed, SCD-1 kicks ass. I have seen and heard tri-vista. Overpriced and overhyped, IMHO. Sounds decent, but then again so does a lot of stuff. Build quality, although 'flashier' than SCD-1, is not as good physically. I do not care for the overdon...
How does Sony DVP-S9000ES compare to other Sony's?
hi Albert - Thanks - glad you think so. Agreed the 9000 is a good player - too bad they stopped making them. I think it betters the 999ES, at least as far as build quality and aesthetics. If they just added multichannel SACD and maybe a 2nd laser ...
How does Sony DVP-S9000ES compare to other Sony's?
I have an SCD-1, an (1996?) Xa7ES, a S9000Es and also an SACD-1000. (crazy, I know! I just sold the Phillips). The 9000 is a very nice piece, esp. for the money and formats that it does. The one down side was mentioned - it doesn't read CD-Rs. It'...
Platinum Audio Solos-vs-Tyler Ref Monitor
Solo is overly bright. try a few layers of toilet paper over the tweeters behind the grille to tame this. Bass is reasonable for a 4" driver, but really nothing special - a decent 6" 2-way has at least as much if not more bass. (Paradigm ref. Stud...
halogen lighting?
Why couldn't you just remotely locate the transformer from the home-depot type lights? -Ed
"Polyamping" A Look to the Future or Fancy Fad?
The new Pass Labs speakers use this approach. Several "Aleph" style amps internal to each speaker. $40k price tag, but they sounded quite good at CES. -Ed
Harbeth 40 speakers
They are great, indeed. the 40s are fairly big, personally I like the 30s and Super HL5 better (space-wise.). Harbeth recently changed US distributors, so availability was spotty until now. They made their re-entrance at this most recent CES, I wa...
How should I handle this?
See what the manufacturer does. Likely they will fix it for free and perhaps chastise the dealer. Don't be so quick to judge, all you witch-hunters. It could have been an honest mistake. We are only hearing one side of things here. Silicone is not...
"Aesthetically pleasing" DAC???
Hey Jax - Josh has talked about building a DAC but hasn't got to it yet. Hopefully he'll soon have the preamp finished to go with the amps I got from him. (wait until you see this preamp...;-) The next thing I want to get him to build is a phono s...
How to bias the Antique Sound Lab's 1009 monoblock
go to www.audioasylum.com, the Tube Asylum (or SET asylum) and post the question there. Joseph Lau (designer for ASL) will give you the answer, and can likely send a manual too. Most likely, you switch to V1, set meter reading to 850, switch to V2...
