Cartridge break-in: with or without tears?
I've used those Cardas tracks to help break in several cartridges. One friend's Shelter 901 spent weeks on the damn thing before it started sounding decent. My TT turns itself off after 45 minutes, so I take that opportunity to brush things off an...
End of Record Distortion
Someone just posted on VA that changing mats and/or clamps on his MMF 5 resulted in changing levels of inner groove distortion. I expect that the combination which sounded best did so because it reduced intra-vinyl resonances best. This in turn ga...

Much like Goldilocks, I'm looking for "just right".Good analogy. Aren't we all?!Paul and I are currently reviewing two ZYX cartridges, the Airy2 and Airy3, with a third model possibly to follow. Without spilling the beans I can say that in one son...
End of Record Distortion
Hi Paul,AS affects groove tracing of course, but all it does is alter the balance of stylus pressure between the two groove walls. If the distortion is worse on one channel than the other then AS would be the first thing to try. I didn't get that ...
End of Record Distortion
Re-aligning your cartridge may or may not help. It depends on whether the problem is caused by poor groove tracing or by stylus/groove mis-alignment.Try increasing VTF a bit. This might help improve groove tracing. The adjustments most likely to h...

Another insightful post Twl. Listen to him folks, he knows of what he speaks. For maximum performance from an unsuspended table... That squishy bit is best which squishes least, which finally amounts to this, that squishy bit is best which squishe...

What do you do when nothing seems to get LP clean?
Wildoats,Please do not think our discussions about the safety of various cleaning solutions was in any sense an endorsement of using tap water. Nothing could be further from the truth.I'm one who expressed certain concerns about the long term impa...
i want a new turntable ?
If you just want to fix the speed, which is a well know problem of your table, a layer or two of tape around the platter where the belt rides is meant to do the trick. I believe electrical tape is often used.A search on VA for something like rega ...

According to Twl, who should know, an Encounter is barely better than a HIFI-modded Silver, which sells for nearly $600 less. In your present circumstnces that seems like an even more reasonable solution.
Teres Turntable Support - concrete, wood, rack...?
The concensus on the Teres discussion forum has been that a solid, high mass stand works best. This is especially true if you're lucky enough to have a solid floor, as you apparently do. Stability and mass loading are at the core of the Teres desi...
Advice on semi-auto turntables?
I agree with Newbee and Lugnut. Very few of the better arms have an end-of-side lift mechanism. None that I know of have an arm return mechanism. Adding unnecessary mechanical bits to an arm is just asking for sonic problems.Aftermarket arm lifts ...
Spindle/Bearing Lube
Of course A'gon and AA are also full of people who post strong opinions about things they've never actually listened to. ;-) It takes all kinds of people to keep this place from becoming boring, which fortunately it never is.P.S. I've never heard ...

Artar 1,Congratulations on working through your decision process in a way that not only gives you comfort, but even someone to blame! I haven't actually heard any of the components you chose, but I get credit for the nice wood finish, right? :)Sin...
