High End CDP's that play CD-R & CD-RW's?
Count this as another vote for the Sony XA777ES, really a great-sounding CD player that also plays CDRs and CD-RWs. Consider the SACD capability a bonus. BTW, I've tried at least l0 brands of CDRs and never had a problem with either the Sony or a ...
Feedback on Omega Mikro cables and Ic's
I have several sets of Omega Mikro ICs and think they're outstanding, far better than the Kimber KCAG and AQ Diamond/Lapiz cables they replaced. The only downside is their fragility. Mine is a tube system; don't know how they would sound with SS g...
Your "Budget Cable" recommendations, please......
I second the Mapleshade vote. I have their speaker cable and power cords too, replaced all my Kimber KCAG and 8TC and my AQ Lapis and Diamond. Fantastic stuff, and very reasonable.
who are the best people to do equipment mods?
My vote goes to John Hillig of Musical Concepts (check out www.musicalconcepts.com). In addition to his mods, he also sells great, inexpensive cables.
CD - upgrade, replace used, buy new?
Totally self-serving, of course, but you might want to check out my Audiogon listing for a Musical Concepts-modified Pioneer DV-4l4. As noted, it blew away my then-player, a CJ tubed DAC and transport combo (cost me $3600). I've been running it th...
Phono preamp suggestions...
If you can find a used NYAL Moscode Super-It, one of Harvey Rosenberg's products from the l980s, you'll be in hog heaven. Shouldn't cost more than $l50-200, uses three l2AX7s, and has served my $6,000 vinyl front end for years. Modded with a new p...
suggestions for DVD player as transport
I disagree. The Pioneer DVDs like the 4l4 and 525 make excellent transports, especially when modified. Better yet, my Musical Concepts-modded 4l4 didn't even need a DAC except to achieve some audiophile cred ( When hooked up to a full-bells-and-wh...
TAS new look-the end is near?
RCprince, you are so right. This is a business and has to be run like a business. I've been reading TAS for decades wondering all the while how it could survive as HP's playpen. The answer is obvious. I hope I'm not the only one wishing Harley and...
ET-2 TONEARM VS VPI JMW 10 ARM
I've had two ET2 arms (the second one came with a used TNT) and one JMW arm, now upgraded to a l0.5. Trust me, go with the JMW. I destroyed more records and styli with the ET2 arms than I care to remember.
The Best of Naxos' classical catalog
Of the several hundred Naxos discs I own, bought mostly on the basis of reviews, there are really very few clunkers (stay away from their early Rameau stuff) and some are sensational. Their "Naxos Historical" line is also full of gems, especially ...
The Absolute Sound Review of Sony SCD-XA777ES ???
The Oade Bros. price was $2,000 with free shipping by Fed Ex. It came double-boxed in perfect condition. There is now a 5-year factory warranty on this unit.
The Absolute Sound Review of Sony SCD-XA777ES ???
I thought it was a perfectly adequate review. Along with the one in Stereophile (and comments on AA), it helped me decide to order one from Oade Bros. It arrived Monday, sounds great on both SACD and CD, should sound even better after break-in. I'...
Best CD-R Recorder--Tascam, HHB, Marantz, Sony???
Tascam CDRW700. Got mine at the local Guitar Center for under $600, to replace a Pioneer 555 that sounded okay but restricted you to "Audio" disks and forbad digital dubbing. The Tascam sounds really great, is very flexible, and has burned several...
To plug in or not to plug in?
What power conditionar are we talking about here? They're not exactly identical after all.
Your advice on a good cable
If you don't have small children, nosy pets, or clumsy cleaning people, I can recommend Mapleshade wire (www.mapleshaderecords.com). It's inexpensive, covered by a moneyback guarantee, and it really transformed my main system. Only problerm is it'...
