The new line of Sony DVD/SACD players
I bought the DVP-NS500V two weeks ago. For under $300 it's a fine "training wheels" SACD player, but don't expect to be blown away. Do expect a long break-in period during which it sounds pretty bad. I'd love to see a comparison between this unit ...
Tube reliability in amps
I've had very good luck with Conrad-Johson, first MV-75A1s and now Premier l2s. The output tubes are biased individually (and easily). And, IMO, the sound is outstandingly musical. have to confess, though, that the fact CJ is about l2 miles away i...
Is there any "volume attenuater"
Ihave a pair of "volume attenuators" I bought from DB systems years ago. You insert them in the signal path (RCA plugs on one end and jacks on the other) and they cut the volume by a fixed amount. God knows how much. Or how much quality you might ...
What is the name of your system.
We have always called it "Mother." I used to remember why.
How BIG is yours?
Without actually counting them, I'd guess 3,000 lps, l,500 CDs, l50 R-R tapes (prerecorded), l00 cassettes, and several hundred 78s. Play 'em all, too, which is why I don't get out of the house much.
Help: Best Audio CD-R and CD-RW Blanks?
Maybe I've just had good luck but I've used all kinds of brands in my Pioneer and Tascam recorders and can't tell the slightest difference in quality, performance, and reliability while burning several hundred CDRs and CDR-Ws. These have been play...
Another esoteric inquiry - Hadcock tonearm
That issue of HiFi+ listed a UK distributor's web site as www.thecartridgeman.com. Looks like a neat arm. Good luck.
I don't remember much, but I remember......
As a cerfified geezer (72+), my first was a couple of 78 rpm jazz records by Johnnie Guarnieri bought sometime in the early-mid l940s, played on a Sears Silvertone phonograph with a cactus needle. Top that! I still have 'em and they never sounded ...
Cartridge recommendations for JMW 10 arm ?
What I meant to say is that the JMW arm's mass is optimized for MCs, but mayber I better quit while i'm behind.
Audiogon Grading Scale - the gold standard?
Gold Standard or not, I recently bought a speaker system via Audiogon that was graded 9/l0, arrived at something like 6/l0 and carried other, shall we say, discrepancies from the posted description. Then the seller nagged me for positive feedback,...
Cartridge recommendations for JMW 10 arm ?
Mike at VPI told me this arm (which I have) is optimized for medium-to-high mass moving coils (which is why I've been having some tracking/warp problems with my Grado Reference). Despite the minor problems, it's a great arm. Enjoy it, and especial...
Spades or bananas
Re bare wires oxidizing and compromising the sound, I understand the theory, but it sure hasn't worked out in practice. I've used them this way for a year (at least) and for a while was periodically cleaning them with Kontak but couldn't detect th...
Spades or bananas
Any votes out there for bare wire? Having gone from the fanciest spades "backwards," I can't find any reason to reverse course, at least in my system (CJ Prem. l2s to Gallo Ultimates via Mapleshade wire). Just my 2 cents.
What spkr cable should i consider???
Sheldon 60 is right. Mapleshade Golden Helix destroyed my biwired Kimber 8TC at substantially less cost.
Radiohead read on
The new (November) issue of Jazz Times has a feature article on the jazz influences in Radiohead's work.
