Fozgometer Connection
Stringreen, the difference may be in your use of balanced (XLR) cables, where the output tends to be substantially higher than with unbalanced RCAs (which I'm kinda forced to use). I tried upping the phonostage gain but the needle never goes above ...
Fozgometer Connection
Stringreen, I tried your way (from tape outs on the preamp direct to the Foz) and it seems to work but doesn't put the Foz' needle into a range where it's simple to see any left/right deviation. Guess I'll have to up the gain on the preamp to make...
Fozgometer Connection
I run my Foz direct from the tonearm connections (JMW 10.5i). Are your tonearm outputs balanced too? If so I'd go with XLR/RCA adapters rather than take the output from a phonostage or preamp. Just my take.
KT 66 or NOS EL34
I thought the EL34 "equivalent" was a KT77, not KT66. No?
Soundsmith VPI Zephyr vs. Dynavector 17D3??
Afterthought. Right after I got my Zephyr I noticed it was a low-rider -- cartridge body nearly touching the records -- to the point where I called Peter Ledermann (Soundsmith) to discuss this with him. He suggested changing VTF from 2.0g (where I...
Soundsmith VPI Zephyr vs. Dynavector 17D3??
My Zephyr sounded great out of the box and if it broke in further, it was rather subtle. Never heard a 17D3, but the Zephyr is a marked improvement over a 10X5 I had, which went on Ebay within a couple months after I bought it. Sounds like there m...
Best 845 tube out there?
Bayreuth, frankly no. It's been too long. I used a couple 845s between the B and the Psvane T, including metal types. I can only say that to me the Psvane 845T was the ultimate, in my system. Made the metal types sound "metallic," as I've noted ab...
Best 845 tube out there?
I still love the sound of my Psvane 845T tubes after approx. 2 years. One of the original pair died after 12 months and I replaced it with a single. No further problems. I should note, though, that this is the only 845 tube I have ever had fail (m...
Aesthetix Rhea & Calypso Tube Upgrade
I just checked Ebay (8/8) and there are 10 of the 7058 tubes I mentioned going for a total of $70, buy-it-now. These are NOS. That's more than I usually paid, but not bad.
Aesthetix Rhea & Calypso Tube Upgrade
Check with Glenn Buckley at Aesthetix. I've found an excellent replacement for the 12AX7 is a 7058 tube. NOS 7058s turn up on Ebay in quantity every once in a while at reasonable prices, but are not especially cheap when bought one or two at a tim...
LOUSY SOUND AT LIVE CONCERTS
Not just larger venues. In a small jazz room, every instrument was miked. Screamingly loud. Trying to keep up with the rockers, I guess.
Do power cords make a difference?
Yeah they make a difference. My own epiphany happened when a group of audiobuddies were listening to a new CD player. One of the guys suggested switching in a new power cord he had brought along. In it went, and the rest of us just looked at each ...
Scraping sound
Maxh, as noted above, this happened to my Zephyr. Peter Ledermann told me that it will track well at 1.4g, or even 1.2g, but if that doesn't solve the problem, contact Peter.
Scraping sound
I have a Zephyr and was concerned about how low it seemed to be riding on the records. I called Peter Ledermann (Soundsmith, maker of the Zephyr) who suggested raising the rear end of the tonearm (VPI JMW 10.5i) and reducing the vertical tracking ...
PS Audio P3 power Plant
Plato is right. The new generation PS Audio units (P3, P5, P10 -- I have a P10) are way more efficient that the old series. I had two of the original P300s and yes, they were inefficient and ran very hot. They couldn't begin to handle one of my 84...
