Vinyl Care
Thanks, Neil. Looks like it's been changed since then and the cans no longer mention the QA compounds. I'll save my old cans in case I ever fancy taking up solvent sniffing.
Vinyl Care
@antinn Is GruvGlide similar to Last? There was a time when I used it, but not in recent years. I did like the smell....
How much do I need to spend to make vinyl sound better than digital?
Vinyl can never sound like SACD on a good player  I like SACD because it sounds very nearly as good as vinyl! Comments above on the quality of the individual recording highlight the spanner in the works here. I was working through old Moody B...
Develop a hierarchy for phono playback
@theflattire You can have the greatest TT/Cart ever but running it through a mediocre phono stage only gets you mediocre. The same argument applies to each component further downstream until you get to the speakers (or hearing aids!) But what d...
Recorded Cleaning Machnies
Neil and Bill have it right: you can't tell by looking, and some combination of mechanical cleaning and ultrasonic cleaning is needed for older records. Maybe if one only bought new records an U/S machine alone would suffice, but I can't see why a...
What are your go to LP's for evaluating new gear or new tubes?
Another recommendation for an album with great sound is Suzanne Vega "Solitude Standing" (A&M SP 5136). I bought it on cassette in 1987 and hadn't heard it for many years. Since finding a vinyl copy on discogs it has become a regular wife-anno...
Develop a hierarchy for phono playback
I’m not @lewm, but "recant"? Seems to suggest that not following fixed percentages is heretical!
The Sacred Ritual of Vinyl: A Return to Mindful Listening
I had a neighbour who was a pianist and had a grand piano. When she visited and heard my hi-fi she said "My God, it's like the piano is in the room" - which was nice, but I know that when I listen to her playing an actual piano at her house it sou...
Develop a hierarchy for phono playback
@whart wrote So, my response should not be taken as a "rule" to apply to others, but rather, where I got the biggest uptick, once everything else was primed for it. I think that last clause is important: all other things being equal, the close...
What are the most balanced relatively neutral cartridges at each price level ?
Question: if a balanced and neutral cartridge was available in the lower price range, why would anyone pay more for one? (I suppose cynics would say for bragging rights.) Seriously, if a cartridge is balanced and neutral buy it. My view is that t...
High Performance Moving Iron Cartridge Candidates?
I'm glad you are happy, and trust that it will continue. (I have an LP-S, and it sits in its box as my Decca and Soundsmith cartridges deserve their places far more on my tonearms. But that's my ear and my system, which are undoubtedly different ...
Have you reached your end point with this addictive hobby?
I've thought so, several times..... Each time I must be getting a little closer to nirvana, the gains are getting smaller and costing more. Time to play some of the less often heard recordings and enjoy what I have.
What are the most balanced relatively neutral cartridges at each price level ?
@billstevenson Do you mean to tell me the SME V is not still considered a reference tonearm?  I must be seriously out of touch.  Please define what you mean by reference. As I've pointed out before, SME gets little love here in the colonies. Re...
Impedance Loading for SS Hyperion
Is that with a Hyperion, Bill? Using an SUT, as I expect you know, the resulting loading will be 47,000 ÷ turns ratio² = load (assuming you have a 47k MM input).
Impedance Loading for SS Hyperion
Yes 47kΩ on an MC input. You're right that MM inputs are almost always 47k, and are often fixed at that.
