Integrated Tube Amp Demo
Nice bakeoff plan and some good candidates.  Fun winter project.  Heads up, these amps, tubes, internal coupling caps all can take upwards of 100hrs to burn in to start sounding right.  How much time do you have with each?  If they are new units, ...
Should I use long interconnects, or long speaker cables?
With single ended (non-XLR) interconnect cables, you are in more of a pickle. XLR is designed for longer runs, single-ended ICs are not. Longer speaker cables impact the sound. Shorter the speaker cables, the better.  Long runs of quality speaker ...
Hi end tube preamps, it’s all about functionality!!
These two types of consumers are a contradiction to each other. One wants low noise, the other adds noise and ruins the music. Been there and done that with expensive high end integrated preamp-processors used for two channel audio and hi-fi home ...
Constant noisy tubes maybe go solid state?
One example, having a humming (unclean) coax cable from a cable TV company plugged into nearby boxes sharing similar or conjoined AC outlets on the same circuit back to the junction box can do this too.  Amps with big transformers can simply ampli...
So you have a great hi end stereo preamp, but
Same question opened in different threads over and over, looks familiar:https://forum.audiogon.com/discussions/hi-end-tube-preamps-it-s-all-about-functionality
Hi end tube preamps, it’s all about functionality!!
Few people with "high end tube preamps" want a noisy TV/Cable system hooked to their 2-channel audio system used for listening to music. And, no, it’s all about "sound" quality first for audiophiles. Functionality is secondary. Circuit boards and ...
Constant noisy tubes maybe go solid state?
So are you saying the QS tube preamplifier is working reasonably for yournow paired with your Odyssey solid state amplifier?Doing some research on this the past weekend having gotten lucky with prior tube pre and SS amp combos along with tube amp ...
Cary SLI80 as just a preamp?
@ozzy62 Since the SLI-80 is only an average (I'm being kind here) sounding integrated amp, I would have my doubts that it would make a very good preamp. The standard version is less than the F1 version, and a fully upgraded SLI-80 is in a complete...
Constant noisy tubes maybe go solid state?
06-06-2018 5:23pm by Jackd...As the Odyssey amps have low input sensitivities in the 1 volt range you need to be careful of tube preamps with high gain especially if your speakers have sensitivity ratings much over the mid-80's range. Was member ja...
Constant noisy tubes maybe go solid state?
Sure seems like there is something else going on here.  Several colleagues with your same preamp with few issues like this. Sourced several tested and matched pairs 12AU7 and 12AT7 tubes from many of the same providers you have with minimal issues...
Cary SLI80 as just a preamp?
Its a good thought experiment and it "could" work with some added investigation and validation of what is inside. And, perhaps the point earlier is it could also be a waste of a good SLI-80 amplifier to use it as a preamp only, long-term. Not sayi...
Need ideas to match a pair of monitor with 40WPC tube amp
"i have had poor experiences with these types of speakers, the super lightweight drivers seem to have a coloration i disliked... tried cabasses and zu’s... maybe i will give these omegas a try".Ditto @jjss49 And here all this time I thought it was...
Cary SLI80 as just a preamp?
The header logo at the top of this page also reads "A discussion forum by Audiogon". Asking here about removing tubes from your SLI-80 to use it in a way it was not designed to be used, most would simply advise to contact the manufacturer with you...
Cary SLI80 as just a preamp?
Another idea.  If you are attempting to now use a SLI-80 integrated amp as a preamp instead, another option would be to sell the SLI-80 and apply the funds towards a second hand SLP-98 preamp. Similar value on the used market. Having owned both, t...
Looking for a vinylesk sounding DAC
Since more good DACs and improved streaming services have evolved the past 2-3 years, people are rediscovering how tubes in a DAC and good tube preamps and amps can help to make it sound even more enjoyable.  My vinyl rig and high $ cartridges don...
