FM Tuner for audiophiles-is it a bad idea today?
+1 @yyzsantabarbara Nice! I have a Magnum Dynalab MD-102 FM Tuner as well. Added bypass caps and OCC interconnects. Super nice.  Listen to it often.

A worthy FM tuner thread you replied to late October with 60+ replies, fyi. https://forum.audiogon.com/discussions/can-anyone-recommend-an-fm-receiver-that-would-play-into-a-re...
suggestion for a SS class AB amp that sounds like a class A ... if such a thing exists
@alaindexe Any thought on the Audio Sector products (gain clone) ?I’ve never built one and read up on some stuff Darko was doing years back. Reviewed the DIY LM kits, not much help to ya. Maybe check the DIYAudio site, folks there can possibly hel...

alaindexe’s Altec 620A speakers are close to 100db sensitivity @1w, 4-feet away, right?. Can operate well with two (2) really good watts. Low watt delicacy of targeted 20-30w musical amplifiers like Firstwatt, Sugden, Pucini sound would be the tic...

@zm Which FirstWatt model are you comparing to?Each of them have a different circuit topology and output transistor types, SE, PP, different impedances, and wattage power output. Interested if your AA Pucciini sounds more like a SIT-3, F6/F7, or J...

@alaindexe next step, the cross overs...FYI, for some added inspiration - peeking over on the DIYaudio site, members were commenting about before and after results from upgrading and refreshing the old Altec 604/620 crossovers with GPA crossovers ...

Extra long speaker cables and extra long interconnects with high capacitance can be impactful. Particularly as noted earlier when gear/voltages are not designed to be used with long runs.   A simple test is to pull all the gear super close togethe...

No worries, @alaindexe , all in good collaboration - you have a nice amp and speakers worth investing in. Fwiw, a few years back, helped a few locals to spec/design/build some very large Altec (Onken, custom) fridge size speakers (3 pairs). It was...
Benchmark DAC 3B Vs. Schiit Gungnir Multibit and a question.
The "Coda" truly deserves to be fed by a really good sounding DAC and great preamp. I live 10 minutes from Coda, grew up in ESS, Threshold, Pass and Coda land, all started in the same place around here. Always start at the source, and then let the...

@alaindexe @decooney : it seems that you were right... (read above)... thx...alaindexe, Thx, we will see. Said the old way, "the proof of the pudding is in the eating". Disclaimer:  Assuming your current amp is factory original Sudgen and not a co...
Benchmark DAC 3B Vs. Schiit Gungnir Multibit and a question.
I forgot if the DAC3B required much burn-in but the AHB2 amp required hardly any hours to sound it’s best. I have had 2 units to compare.@yyzsantabarbara I gave the BM DAC3B several weeks run-in time and it seemed to make no difference, which was ...

Your Sudgen is a respectable amp, and have worked on some Altec related custom designs with a few friends, they can be transparent with great crossover parts inside, once upgraded.  While I hate to open this can of worms, what sort of source and c...
Benchmark DAC 3B Vs. Schiit Gungnir Multibit and a question.
@yyzsantabarbaraI am going to blow some money on the R2R Halo May Level 3 DAC just to see what the differences are. You’ll hear a difference -and- if you are more acclimated to the big wide open clear sound of the DAC3B, its possible you might not...
Benchmark DAC 3B Vs. Schiit Gungnir Multibit and a question.
@jjss49 "...but becomes hard to listen to and live with for long stretches...". Exactly.  This was my experience as well on my system, and why I exercised the return policy. Ended up keeping the R2R Ladder DAC instead.
Tube Amp lower power vs higher power and cruising volume
@jmphotographyFYI, give your amp, tubes, caps inside time to settle in if it’s all brand new. Break-in / burn-in is a real thing, and it will smooth out some more once you get 200+hrs on it. Let this occur before changing more output or small inpu...
