Great guys to deal with in the audio industry
Another vote for Lou at Daedalus Audio. Is this a competition by the way, if so, Lou is winning? nowones mentioned Fritz at Fritz speakers, nothings too much trouble and Herbie at Herbies Audiolab. Any coincidence that these are all one man and hi...
Do stands make a difference for equipment?
I nam sure they do, as long as you avoid glass shelves. I use a good quality, but not expensive wood stand and add decent footers, which can be a cheaper way to good isolation, but I am sure they make a difference. I would say TT> tube amp or p...
Who makes the highest quality tube amps?
Some good suggestions, including Tron, just great amps and good support from Graham who makes them. For amps I have used myself and it's a few, I would say Ayon, for sound, build quality and reliability
Tannoy Westminister VS dc10 Instrument Grande V
I have'nt heard DC10, though I have heard good things about them, but Tannoy is the business. If you want real wood, efficiency and the ability to reaaly drive a big room, then I can't think of many alternatives. I have heard them for prolonged pe...
The Audio Research Reference 10 is here $30k
HiFi News in the UK reviewed the unit in the latest March edition. Ken Kessler who reviewed it is an ARC fan and uses a Ref 5. He was pretty enthusiastic and felt it to be the best Pre he has heard. The magazine is as reliable as magazines, with t...
Gone are the days of the great audition.
There is a new model developing. HiFi seems to be becoming more of a cottage industry, with one man operations selling direct. They often offer home demo's with owners of the speakers. I have Daedalus speakers and Lou Hinkley offers that to potent...
CD vs FLAC
This is nearly impossible to answer, as it depends so much on the DAC. I used a Leema Antilla CD player and now an Ayre QB9 with Mac Mini. I think both AIFF and Apple lossless are slightly better than CD, but that, I am sure, is because of the bet...
Who makes the highest quality tube gear?
Having owned a few, Viva, CJ, I think Ayon is hard to beat for price, sound and reliabilty, at the moment. No complaint about CJ and Viva, by the way.
Cables for low power amps and Horns?
I would be interested in peoples views. You occasionally see manufacturers producing cables, say specifically for tube amps. I have thought cables are either well made and designed or not, have synergy to ones components or not. Do other people th...
Weakest Link? Your honest opinions.
As sbrown says, look at accessories first. Maximise what you have got, before a big outlay on new kit. The turntable in particular, needs good isolation. A wall shelf on a solid, not partition wall, perhaps with some borrowed stillpoints. Is the r...
Integrated amp: Can it perform equal to separates?
Of course they can and as Phaelon says, they "should" be better value. One box instead of two, preamp that again, should, be matched with the power section. The days when customers and manufacturers dismissed integrated amps as a poor second choic...
Stillpoints Ultra SS under your speakers?
I have used the Ultra SS and they were clearly better than the Edensound brass footers I had been using. At the same time, I managed to get hold of Track Audio Isolation feet, which are on sale in the US. The Stillpoints went back. Track Audio mad...
The Demise of the Hi-End Audio Store
Friends, we are a dying breed, ageing and falling in numbers. Shops, high or low end, can only be supported by a customer base, it is tiny. Take a look at the magazines, they were sold in the 100's of thousands in the 70's. I think it was reported...
Anyone who has had a VdH Colibri for over 1000hrs
The dealer is the High End broker, that Syntax mentioned. I bought one recently for E1300, if I remember correctly. They are still on his web site. A good reliable chap to deal with too.
Help Choosing DAC
I am sure Steve must be right, but I have quite a good set up and I can't convince myself of a worthwhile difference between between ALAC and AIFF. Perhaps my ears are getting old, like me. I know he recommended WAV, but I have been scared off by ...
