Brag About Your Vinyl Collection
@dogberry  tell us more about the Faust tapes. I have heard it was ultra rare, but seems to pop up from time to time.
Nordost repair
IMO, Nordost make excellent sounding cables. However, I do think there are competing cables from a few lesser known manufacturers that compete; and these cables can be far less expensive. For example, my Nordost Tyr ic’s are excellent, but some ic...
What happens when the stylus tip wears out on a $12,000 cartridge?
@pindac You make an interesting point about old vinyl and the condition that we can maybe expect. However, with the many new releases/reissues that are coming out and have been released, I see little reason these days to accept a noisy pressing o...
What happens when the stylus tip wears out on a $12,000 cartridge?
@mulveling I have not seen any hard data, however, I have personally witnessed an LP that had been damaged by just one pass of a worn out stylus ( A friend had inadvertently played a new album on his worn out stylus and then I played it back afte...
Replacement Sonus Faber grille strings?
I received my re-string kit today from Fine Sounds. Impressive service. I noticed that they are still Sumiko and also the McIntosh group. I received four packs of the strings, presumably two packs per speaker grill?? I also ordered the strings for...
What happens when the stylus tip wears out on a $12,000 cartridge?
One of the problems with a worn stylus is the fact that it is now damaging your records. This can be something that is initially not that noticeable, until such time as you replace the cartridge or stylus and hear the groove damage! Probably a go...
Nordost repair
I asked the Nordost rep a while back if they could mod my Tyr phono cable. I wanted to go from RCA’s at the tonearm end to a DIN connector. Was told no go.
Borreson X2
I have not heard the X2, but I have heard the X3. The X3 is a tremendous value and hits way above its price point. Presumably the X2 is the little brother to the X3, and should give much of what the X3 does, but with less bass power. The X2 should...
Replacement Sonus Faber grille strings?
@krell303  Thanks for the info. I also spoke to Fine Sounds and sure enough the speaker grill strings are available. I also asked for the stand strings, which I am now going to be getting from Italy.  Not sure of the procedure to mount the strings...
Ultimate Turntable search...OMA K5 or ?
@whart To your point about good dealers and bad dealers, there are surprisingly a lot more bad dealers than one would expect. I have had a couple of recent experiences with bad dealers. One was so rude to me that i walked out of their establishme...
Cost Incurred to Achieve a Vinyl LP Replay
@pindac  While I agree that the individual cost of a record is likely to be much less than a piece of hardware to replay it, the accrued cost of a decent size collection is usually far more. So much so, that if collectors, like myself, added up th...
Cost Incurred to Achieve a Vinyl LP Replay
Vinyl is a fairly pricey endeavor. Not so much because of the cost of the hardware (although one can splurge here as much as one wants), but more so because of the software cost. Some folks I know have record collections that exceed one hundred th...
New, Very Interesting CD Transport
Interesting thread. I own an Esoteric DV60, which I use solely as a transport. The DV60 is a universal player, which means it can read SACD's, DVD A's etc., I do not think it is any less capable as a transport than a unit designed purely for CD's....
Ultimate Turntable search...OMA K5 or ?
@peterayer A friend heard the AS 2000 a while back, reported to me that he was quite underwhelmed. He believed that the speed control was marginal and that the string contributed to wow and flutter. My experience with the old war horse SME 3012 t...
Ultimate Turntable search...OMA K5 or ?
I have heard a lot of top turntable designs. IMO, the best and by quite a large margin, is the Basis Transcendence. It is still a belt drive, but AJ (RIP) hit it out of the park with this table. Plus, his Superarm is a great arm. Like Mike L said...
