With your budget, i would suggest looking for a used CAT preamp. The newer the better. This preamp will give you the virtues you are looking for.
Help with cartridge choice for Linn LP-12, Ittok turntable
@dwette   What I am trying to tell you is that the Lyra's with the new angle technology require a more precise set up than your run-of-the-mill cartridge to sound their best. Sure, you can set up the cartridge to a decent approximation, but you wi...
Help with cartridge choice for Linn LP-12, Ittok turntable
@dwette  the new angle technology of the current Lyra’s requires a very precise VTF, SRA and Azimuth alignment. I had my Kleos set up twice by two different dealers, the first got it very close, but the second time the tech was more precise and ha...
Help with cartridge choice for Linn LP-12, Ittok turntable
You have a system that probably tends to lean towards the warmer sound. As such, maybe consider a Lyra Delos, as it works quite well in your Ittok, plus it will off-set some of the warmth towards more neutrality. Set up with a Lyra cartridge is ve...
How competitive are you with your system?
@mihorn   Sorry, but I do not hear depth or really image precision on your videos. Probably caused by the playback through my desktop system.
How competitive are you with your system?
@carlos269  I only offered the two old videos as example of what I feel is the reason why video over the web is not a good way to judge a system. In my examples, what cannot be heard, particularly in the Miles Davis track is the ability of the sys...

@carlos269   this is the video:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nlOhiTpZCek And another even older vid..https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zRNfxQRTduA My old system sounded a lot better in real life than these videos portrayed.
How competitive are you with your system?
@carlos269  I don’t think the recording per se is the issue with listening on video. The problem is more likely due the reproduction equipment and what one is listening to it on.  i have a fairly well liked video on YouTube from seven years ago w...
How competitive are you with your system?
@carlos269     so what says you of systems that sound exceptional and great on audio recordings embedded in videos? Problem is that i have never heard a video that comes anywhere near close to what the sound of as system sounds like if one is ...
How competitive are you with your system?
Several years back I attended an audio demo wherein the system did sound excellent. The dealer asked the attendants how the system compared to real ’live’ music. Some folks came out and stated this system sounded better than live to their ears!  ...
How competitive are you with your system?
The ability to compare one system to another is not a level playing field. If for no other reason, in this hobby, the room matters more than anything else, and no two rooms are alike.
A Low Cost Pleasant Sounding Used CD Player?
Whatever the OP chooses, he might want to research whether the laser mechanism can be replaced if it fails. There are a number of good CD players and transports out there, wherein the laser mechanism is no longer available. Essentially guaranteein...
what system musicians prefer? Do they care?
@billstevenson  You make some very good points about musicians vs. pure audiophiles. Speaking from my musician side, i do have a very good understanding as to what i want my system to sound like, and do not suffer from 'audiophile nervosa'...yet.
what system musicians prefer? Do they care?
@mahler123   Do you not think that the very same musicians would have been a whole lot happier listening to music on a great system, if they had known about that opportunity and had the option to avail themselves of it?
