Is it possible for a high end manufacturer to overprice their goods?
@steakster While you are correct in alerting folks to the many costs incurred by manufacturers, i also question where the process is when it comes to a speaker ( maybe any speaker/ high end product at this price point) that comes in at a consumer...
Is it possible for a high end manufacturer to overprice their goods?
@labguy while I think your math is not quite correct for this particular speaker, as it leaves out a number of factors, including the R&D costs, shipping, advertising, dealer mark up etc., I do think that it is likely that there is a very sign...
Is it possible for a high end manufacturer to overprice their goods?
@jl35 That business model is common. Question is whether a product in this hobby can be so high priced, that the result is zero sales? Or,not enough sales to justify the product and its cost to come to market? I do wonder if these questions even o...
Franco Serblin Ktêma Loudspeakers
I don’t own them, but they were one of Franco’s better designs, and that says a lot.
Goodbye Everyone
@dogberry   LOL, nice example. SHF is one place I will no longer be wasting my time at.
odd question about stand-mount speakers
I think you answered your own question when you brought up the position of the tweeter, If the tweeter is at ear height, then demising that position with upending the speaker would not be beneficial, but if an improvement can be had with upending,...
Review: Audio Research D-70 mkII Tube amp
One thing I agree with @esporma … the sound of the ARCD70 mk2 is fabulous. I still miss this amp to this day. It really made a great impression on me, and IF one can live with its idiosyncrasies, one of the best low powered amps I have heard.
Goodbye Everyone
As I discovered again today, there are some forums that just are not worth wasting your time with, for a number of reasons. Luckily, this one seems to be an exception, so far.
Review: Audio Research D-70 mkII Tube amp
@esporma if I remember correctly, the biasing didn’t just require one to adjust the power tubes to 65mv, but also to adjust other parameters as well, for which you did need a scope. Also, according to my tech, the opportunity for one to get zappe...
Furutech FI-50 NCF (R) vs FI-28 (R) Differences?
I have cables in my system that use both the FI-50 NCF and the FI-28(r). Both are really good plugs, and I think both are far superior to the run of the mill plug. The FI-28’s are certainly not as impressive looking as the top-of-the-line FI 50’s,...
Power Cable for CDP
A couple of years ago, i had an interesting conversation with the Black Cat cable designer, Chris Sommovigo (RIP). I asked Chris what he felt about making me a power cord for my very power hungry Jeff Rowland model 8T. I wondered if the cable gaug...
Field coil dava cartridge
@rauliruegas Be careful, there are a bunch of folk who believe that the ’terrible 3012’ tonearm is the ne plus ultra! These very same folk will come and bash you at every chance they get. I’m with you, the 3012 is a great tonearm, if you are obl...
Advice for an aspiring musician
If you begin to feel like you are getting into a rut, don't give up. Making music takes time and effort, but it will always reward you.
How old is too old (for SS gear)?
@cdtd  I think my Rowland model 8T (modded by Jeff) competes very well against most of the newer SS amps that i have AB'ed it against. The Rowland 8's were from the early to late 90's. ( a few in the 2000's).
We should reject hard-to-drive speakers more often
Interesting subject. I know of a few a'phile friends who bought speakers without first contemplating what amp will work with them. These folk either no longer own the speaker, or they have bought high powered ( and usually low SQ) ss amps to drive...
