Best TT and cartridge combo used under $1500?
You might be able to find a Gyro SE with arm for about that.
speakers for a smaller listening room
Yeah, you'd still need to do the first reflection points. A small mirror or even an old CD disc together with a laser pointer can be used to find it. I use Blu-Tack type putty to stick the CD on the wall. Place it on the wall where a laser beam bo...
speakers for a smaller listening room
Atsacoustics makes some very inexpensive acoustic panels. They are easy to hang since they have a wood backing and you can easily screw in brackets for wall mounting wire on the back.

I'd try working with these speakers a little more before giving up.Have you tried measuring with some test tones and an SPL meter to narrow down where the frequency humps are? You could try the trick of sitting a foot from the back wall while damp...

Vandersteens -- 2Ce Sig IIs or used 3A Sigs -- would be a good choice if you don't like forwardness or brightness.I've only heard the Dalis in a highly treated showroom. I liked them (and it doesn't hurt they they are beautiful to look at), but th...
Best drink while listening to your rig?
Stone India Pale Ale, which is a very hoppy brew. The Stone brewery is about 10 miles from where I live.
Help on a couple of classical pieces...
I should have mentioned that you can get the Barbirolli recording either in a 5-CD box of Elgar or a 30-CD box of Elgar. The single disc, which is out of print, appears to be more expensive than the 5-CD box!
Help on a couple of classical pieces...
I only have one recording of Havanaise, by Grumiaux, but it's a very good one. He also did a very good Saint-Saens Violin Concerto No. 3.There are a lot of choices for Nimrod (from the Enigma Variations). I think I'd give the nod to Barbirolli/Phi...
Squeezebox hard to see?
Ergonomically, the Touch seems to be aimed those who are sitting near it or walking up to it. It does come with a remote. But unless you're eyes are very good, it's not very usable across a room. I leave mine blanked anyway (for listening in the d...
Cambridge AZURE 840C Balanced vs. Single Ended
Just get some inexpensive XLR cables and try it out. I recommend monoprice.com cables.
small room questions
atsacoustics.com has the most cost effective acoustic panels I've seen (apart from DIY, which they can also supply materials for). Their standard panels have a wood backing, but they also sell them without the wood backing for the best absorption ...
Perhaps we should stick with midfi...
I don't believe it, either.
Is my room too small
You still need to choose speakers carefully so that they don't overload the room with bass. You can only do so much with bass traps.
Gyrodec arm suggestions help?
I believe VTA setup with the IV is the same as with the 309, it's done by loosening a bolt and moving the arm up and down a column against friction with your fingers. It's not a fine adjustment, but it's easier than the Michell VTA adjuster. The 30...
Is my room too small
I would suggest long wall setup (except for dipoles that aren't too sensitive to side walls). I don't agree that sitting next to a wall is bad as long as the wall behind you is damped with acoustic panels at least 4 inches thick.
