stupid question about sources, amps, and loudness
I missed the part about the jumpers on the pre-amp. That's a thoughtful feature. Dgaylin, are you sure about the sound degradation? Make sure you are matching levels when you compare before and after.
stupid question about sources, amps, and loudness
One thing about tube amps is that you'll typically get about 3dB less gain from the 4 Ohm taps.Looking for a low gain amp seems like an awkward way of solving this problem. I would suggest trying attenuators first.
stupid question about sources, amps, and loudness
Yes, input sensitivity of the amp. So your amps would have a gain of20*log10(sqrt(100*8)/1.2) = 27.4 dBWhich is on the moderate side.It would be nice if more amps had switchable gain like some Brystons or variable gain like the Parasound amps.
stupid question about sources, amps, and loudness
The gain is probably the better number to pay attention to because it is not relative the the power rating of the amp.If only the power rating and the sensitivity is given, gain in dB is related to the power rating (at 8 Ohms) and the sensitivity ...
How far apart do you position your speakers ?
Thanks, Hornguys, for the explanation. I guess my speakers are harmonically convergent at my current 95% position.
How far apart do you position your speakers ?
My room is too irregular in shape for any geometric speaker placement method to work, though the irregularity may also work to break up modes.
How far apart do you position your speakers ?
The 83% rule doesn't seem workable in my room. Is there any theory behind it? It seems a rather arbitrary number.I have no symmetry in my room, so I try to keep both speakers and my listening position at least 4 feet from any boundaries, since I c...
How do Dunlavys compared to new stuff?
Lipinski Sound speakers do seem to mimic the Dunlavy design.
Am I on the right track for excellent sound?
You might try the Macbook's optical output first. Will only cost a few bucks for the adaptor (one came with the Monster cable I bought.)For ripping, I suggest XLD over Max. There's also Rip, which I believe is meant to replace Max, but XLD seems m...
Headphone Amp. Where to hook it up??
Use the tape output or other fixed-volume output. Headphone amps often have a pass-through so you can still use the tape out for taping.
where is the soundstage formed
How wide and tall is the cabinet? A narrow cabinet may not have much of an effect, but a wide cabinet will. A short cabinet (well below the tweeters and midrange) may also be OK.
Your three favorite audio dealerships?
In the San Diego area:Stereo Unlimited. Very friendly and generous about loaning equipment. They have an emphasis on analog and tubes. This is where I've dropped the most green. They also have a room full of records. The other two are guys that wor...
WAV versus FLAC
It's under Advanced->File Typesin the server settings. I'm using SBS 7.5.3. Seehttp://soundcheck-audio.blogspot.com/2011/01/soundchecks-squeezebox-touch-toolbox-20.htmlfor this and other tweaks.
WAV versus FLAC
Just finished a "shuffle play" test, 3 FLAC and 3 WAV files. To give the most difference between them, I set the Squeezebox server to send FLAC as FLAC to the player, but send WAV as PCM (default is to also send WAV as FLAC). So the player has to ...
WAV versus FLAC
For those doing comparisons, the tests aren't very useful to others unless they include some info on your setup: software, transport, DAC, etc. (I haven't gotten around to my own tests, I'm just setting up Squeezebox server now so it will send WAV...
