Comparison of Thiel CS2.4 vs. Vandersteen 3A Sig.
Can't comment on Vandersteen but my Thiels certainly are not harsh. They are very detailed and throw a huge soundstage but do require top shelf components upstream to sound their best.Chuck
Electro-Harmonix and Sovtex tubes
Attached is a link to an e-bay seller who I have bought eh tubes from on several occasions. He is very reputable and trustworthy. I believe I have seen him on audiogon as well.http://cgi.ebay.com/Electro-Harmonix-6922-pre-amp-tubes-Gold-Pin_W0QQit...
amp tweaks?
You may want to e-mail reference audio mods and ask them as I believe they have modded Nuforce amps in the past. Here is the link. http://www.referenceaudiomods.com/

I use the EH 6922 gold pins in my cj premier 16lsII pre-amp and like them very much
Pass XA-160 and Avalon Eidolon
I would think a conrad johnson premier 350 would be a good fit. I believe Martin Colloms used a pair of Eidolon Diamonds when he reviewed the 350. You can find a copy of the review on cj's website. Here is the link http://www.conradjohnson.com/It_...
Cost effective mods for a Sony SCD-777ES
Yup, that is why you pick a reputable modder who mods with a goal in mind and with a design philosiphy. And one that has the same goals as you do and also one that you can hear their results. Just R&Ring parts is no guarantee of success by any...
Upgrade PCs While Using Pwr Conditioner?
The first question I would ask myself is does the power conditioner improve the sound. If yes, then I would go on to the power cords. But in all circumstances I would not obsess over it and just enjoy the music.Actually I would take Tvad's suggest...
Cost effective mods for a Sony SCD-777ES
TvadI agree with your assesment that the house sound, as you call it, if sony has a house sound, is changed; no doubt. And also agree that once modded you probably can not go back; depending on the mods performed. My modded SCD-1 is so far beyond ...

DcaudioWho did the cap and resistor work on your player.......or did you buy it that way? Also, hope the DAC works out for you.Chuck
Cost effective mods for a Sony SCD-777ES
DaveDouglas Jesse (RAM east) performed the mods on my player. I did replace the RCA's with silver WBT's but that is about the extent of my modding capabilities. Douglas did replace the the caps on the power supply board but we stopped short of doi...

Vman71I am with you. I can not believe the improvements in my player with the few mods that have been made; it is simply stunning.Chuck
"Budget" preamp choices.
MeyvnAren't you glad you asked. As you can see many different and good suggestions. At this price point you can buy and sell (used of course) and not lose much money until you find what you are looking for.Chuck
Cost effective mods for a Sony SCD-777ES
DcaudioIf your goal is to retain value then IMO you never want to modify anything as you will never get your money back out of the mods and you may actually lose value. Unless your modder is well know for his/her work and has a great reputation su...

Also forgot to mention the transport cap upgrade; I would do that along with the clock. IMO the Sony DAC is still considered one of the best and not the weak link here.Chuck

I would suggest a conrad johnson PV10 (used). It is a tubed unit and requires very little maintenance and is a great value.Chuck
