Time Life Classic Jazz
Clueless, You were actually kind. The Time-Life stuff is mostly dreadful. Not only for content but also for production qaulity....or lack thereof. Doug, the suggestions of Chelillingworth were very good. Actually, many of the great jazz labels, Ve...
What's your favorite MFSL CD's?
Second the Muddy Waters, Johnny Hartman/John Coltrane, BS&T, Elton John Tumbleweed Connection.
Best Recordings
I find many of the Jazz labels are conscienceous about recording and mastering. Verve, Blue Note, Concord all have produced excellent product. In folk, Rounder and Flying Fish do very well. Ryko has taken on many lesser known artists and produced ...
Triphazers - Use them?
I used the Triphazers, accidently crossed the beams and disembowled my cat. It was aweful!! No more tweaks for me.
power cables? What can I expect?
Happynick, You are in luck, but not for $50/cable. I was very skeptical about this upgrade until replacing mine. The MLs tend toward brightness and the cables smoothed them out considerably on my friend's setup (CLS II). Same effect on equipment. ...
Question about cassette player settings
Rockyboy,These guys gave you very good information. I've owned 5 different Nak decks and there are some tricks to very good recordings. Firstly, the Nak can be custom tailored internally for a particular tape formulation. TDKs are decent, but the ...
Using a 220v piece in the US
Gentlemen, I may be remembering incorrectly, but when I lived in Austria, I recall the voltage to not only be 220V, but also 50Hz which raised havoc with some devices. Good luck, but check carefully before taking the plunge. There must be some com...
Help with speaker upgrade
Ewha, You are looking in the right direction with the Triangle and Totem lines. Great stuff. The Sonus Faber has great midrange, but I found them to wimp out on a bass foundation and I'm not a bass freak, I just would like some. I've fallen in lov...
best recordings of 2001?
The reissues RVG (Rudy Van Gelder) of artists such as Milt Jackson, Dexter Gordon, J.J. Johnson and Lee Morgan are excellent. I believe all mastered with tube gear.I know it's not jazz, but the Nickel Creek is maybe the recording of the year. Unbe...
OPINIONS Best FULL RANGE used speaker for SS
Totem floor standers. Believe the Sttaf falls in this price range, is dynamic, images very well and is overall quite musical.
Tool to create professional IEC chassis cut-out...
Slingshot, The alternative I've chosen is to select a powercable I like, drill the hole slightly larger and hardwire the sucker in. Best connection you can have and the only downside of course is not being able to quickly change out and compare fu...
Speaker wire for Martin Logan reQuests?
This is going to be a bright sounding combination. I would look for a high quality copper wire which will not be as bright as silver. Perhaps the Analysis Plus Oval 9 which is very accurate and musical. They show up used on this site.
Speakers for Classical Music
Classical music lovers tend to enjoy a British sound as a group. The Spendors and ATCs for example, have very nice voicing for strings and vocal. They tend not to play real loud nicely, but what they do produce is extremely musical. Also, I've fall...
Suggestions for mini-system -- 300-400
Brian, This is easy. DMC Electronics offers on this site an NAD L-40 factory reconditioned unit for $360. I own one. Paired with some used Paradigm Atoms or something similar this will rock. Lovan offers some 24" stands found online for $55. The D...
Integrated for Dad
Must second the Audio Refinement recommendation. Very musical, strong current delivery and just plain well built. YBA has done their homework.
