Loudness - Why has the industry stopped producing amplifiers with this feature any longer?
Schiit Loki. This 4 band tone control is marvelous. I use it as a loudness switch for low volume evening listening. For some harsh recordings I tweak the mid-high and high freq controls - but very infrequently. So once set, I just switch it in or o...
High quality amplifier to speaker switch
Looks like another nice alternative. Cant be used with vacuum tube amps however. So, one has to be sure to keep amps off when switching, as a precaution. Just like my handmade switches. Thanks for the tip.
Affordable US Made Tube Pre/Power or Integrated Options
Manley Labs.I have 2 systems. The more expensive one has Cary a SLP-05 preamp and Pass Labs XA 60.5 power amps.At less than 1/4 the price for amplification, the cheaper system with a Manley Stingray II sounds better.  Of couse there many other var...
High quality amplifier to speaker switch
Thanks for the Amazon link. I may order it and compare to my homemade switch. I notice that to protect the amps it has an internal load resistor across the terminals. Might affect the SQ or amplifier performance somewhat. Seems like a useful devic...
High quality amplifier to speaker switch
Thanks. I actually made my own switches using toggle switches and Kimber speaker cable. I can’t detect any sound degradation, but they wouldn’t be suitable for tube amps.To be safe, I only switch when the amps are off.
High quality amplifier to speaker switch
I see individual switch parts, and line level switching boxes, but nothing that switches between 2 amps, on the Goldpoint site.Am I missing something?
Covering a TV behind your speakers?
For real sound deadening, I made a screen out of three large terrycloth towels and a 1X2 wood frame. All black, and it fits the tv perfectly. It hangs from 2 brackets on the top. Most people don’t even recognize that the tv is covered. For music-o...
Low volume listening dynamics
Have to second the opinion about the Schiit Loki. Vacuum tube system with sensitive speakers (Audio Physic Scorpios 91 dB) sounds more satisfying, but certainly not live, at lower listening levels. At normal levels the Loki is bypassed.
PS Audio Stellar Phono -vs- Manley Labs Chinook
Correct. The Stingray has no phono section. The Chinook is a complete phono preamp with MC and MM sections. I only use the MM section. With low output cartridges, I think the sound quality is better using an outboard step-up transformer feeding th...
PS Audio Stellar Phono -vs- Manley Labs Chinook
Have a Manley Chinook and Manley Stingray integrated. The Chinook MM section is excellent. (The Stingray is beyond reproach.) The Chinook MC section is not quite as steller. With MC cartridges I use a stepup to boost the SQ.My EAR 825 is ever so s...
Youngsters these days.
I’m using a Lumin streamer and a Modwright-modified Oppo 105 (vacuum tubes) for CD, SACD, and d/a conversion. 2 boxes plus power supplies. Competes favorably with vinyl. In another system, it’s a Cambridge CD transport, an Aurender streamer and a ...
Youngsters these days.
Ok I’m a Boomer. I admit it. Actually one of the first boomers, as I was born exactly 9 mos after VE Day. (If you don’t know what VE Day is - oh well.)After listening to CDs and streaming predominantly of late, I’ve rediscovered vinyl for real, an...
Are tubes really “warm”?
Summarizing the responses thus far:Tube fans believe that, relative to ss, tube electronics have naturalness of timber, fullness and air.Haven’t heard from those who favor ss. I’m guessing that they believe tube “warmth” is a lack of musical dynam...
Are integrated amps technically better than separates?
Have 2 high quality systems. One has separates - 2 mono amps, preamp - that list for $20k.Other has $7k integrated. Sound quality is about the same, although they sound different. However, the room sonic characteristics dominate the difference in ...
Simple question, or is it...
The speed is not based on how long it takes for an electron to get from one end of the wire to the other. It is the time it takes for the information to make the trip. One analogy is that of a train. The information that the train is moving gets t...
