Which is the best SET integrated amp under $1500?
Checkout a Decware (www.decware.com); they love low impedance loads and offer a thirty day money back deal. Maybe not enough power for your speakers but check it out and give Steve Deckert a call to discuss. Other than that you are looking at used...
whats the biggest mistake you made?
Sold a Levinson 27.5 to finance a Parasound home theatre system; huge mistake. The Levinson is worth more than what I paid for it and the Parasound stuff is long gone and I took a bath on it.Oh, left the Thorens TD160 Super mit Grace 707 Mk II (bl...
Solid state "backup" amp recommendation
threshold sa3 class A solid state amp is a good value at around 800/850 and a great performerlevinson 27.5 also wonderful used value but quite a bit more at just under 2000 used for a pristine example
Getting and keeping records clean................
For very dirty records I use warm water with dishsoap and a very soft towel to dry them. A sponge works fine to clean the records. Towels are used to lay the record down to soak off the water. Cheap; recommended as the method by Last Record as wel...
recommend entry-level high-efficiency loudspeakers
FYI on the Klipsch Forte speakers: I was strongly advised by a former Klipsch sales person who is also technically inclined to get the Forte II speaker rather than the Forte. I don't remember the tech diffs but there were a few per John; he said i...
Denon DL304
Have no idea what the issues were with reliability; saw a few people mentioning this on one of the various analogue forums. I was unable to find one to purchase new in any event. The Shelter vs the DL103R might be akin to a very, very good solid st...
want to try a SET but where to start, I have......
Regarding the poster that categorzied SET tube amplifiers as suffering from "mushy bass and loss of dynamics". This blanket statement is simply not true; ie, not all SET tube amps suffer from these ills.A correctly designed SET tube amp using qual...
Having second thoughts on Khorns Need help
Thiels sound very, very good at high volume with rock and roll; and all other types, too. They are also an excellent value on the used market. The model 3.5, 5, and 7 would be the ones for you to take a look at.Main issue with thiels is their ampl...
Need to shield speakers.
Sell them and buy shielded speakers; there are plenty around in various price levels.
Whats the best sampling for A do D to CD
Check out an Alesis hard disk recorder new at about 800; has good AD and DA converters. Try to avoid sampling conversions if at all possible. The Alesis allows you to record to the hard drive, apply sound EQ (such as maximizing the levels without ...
A few possible upgrades from Spendor BC-1
I would add the Spendor 2/3 speaker and the SP100 to your list.
Records to CD ripping need basic help
Try an Alesis hard disk recorder. You don't need a PC and it works very well as an audio component. Has pretty good A/D in it, too. About 800 brand new.
Which preamp to buy?
VTL 2.5 or 5.5. Both are currently in production, VTL seems like it is going nowhere, and the two units sound very good. The 5.5 is a great piece and the successor to the great VTL Ultimate preamplifier.
Denon DL304
I have read of reliability issues with the 304. I wound up with a Shelter 501 II and a Denon DL103R. The Denon works great on the Scheu classic 12"
Help me deceide on pre-amp please
I'd stretch a couple of hundred and find a VTL 5.5. This is a top tier preamp. Whatever preamp you buy it is always not a bad idea to run the serial number through the MFR to find out its history. VTL can give you this info on the phone for most o...
