Cartridge Suggestions for a Newbie Depending on your budget I would suggest there are better tables out there than an old fashioned three point suspended and very polite belt drive from the UK. The fully upgraded Linn LP12 is nice but way overpriced IMHO. That Bluenote table/arm at...
am/fm tube tuners A McIntosh MR74 is also an excellent tuner that goes for around 500 and will probably appreciate as it is close in performance to the much more sought after units (mr78, mr71)

anyone heard the Sophia Princess 300B Mesh tubes? No, the engineer that designs our amps says it will put out a bit less power than a standard 300b design (7/8 watts). That is assuming it is conservatively driven, though. The new Princess tube is a straight swap with the standard 300b tubes. Unle...
Denon POA-2800 vs. Sony TAN-90ES Wait for a nice mint Threshold SA2 (or SA3; not sure of the model) which is a pure class A 50 wpc amp...about 800 or so...wonderful amp for the money and more than enough power for your speakers
am/fm tube tuners And, if you do get a tube tuner make sure the tubes are good and that you can source replacements easy and they do not cost too much money. I've been warned that many of the tubes in old tuners might be hard to find and expensive.
For fuller mids:VPI Scoutmaster or Michell Gyro SE I'd take the Michell with the RB600. Add incognito wiring (or audio note silver) and a Dynavector and you'll never look back. the Michell technoweight is a material upgrade, too, and allows you to defeat the spring VTF adjustment and use dynamic b...
MG-1 Air Bearing Tonearm? Anyone experience it? I am thinking of ordering one, too, once your findings are posted as I require a new tonearm.
What do I add to make my system HT ? Arcam AVR300 by leagues over the others mentioned. Great product. The AVR200 is an even better deal at about 600 used if you have speakers that will work with 70 watts (five channels only; not 7.1). I owned one for a bit and sold it as I wanted th...
am/fm tube tuners McIntosh MR65 with multiplex feature. I think that is the only McIntosh tube tuber with AM/FM; all others are FM only. Expect to have to put money into anything that old you buy as almost certainly passive parts (tubes, capacitors, etc) will requi...
Can a DAC help? A quality DAC will make an audible improvement over the stock Denon DACs. I used an Audio Note DAC 1 Signature and ABed it against the Denon DAC and it was no contest. The Denon phono stage is pretty pedestrian, too.
anyone heard the Sophia Princess 300B Mesh tubes? Have not heard them but have a pair we were going to build an amplifier around. We changed our mind on this (building the amp) as this tube is NOT a swap for a 300b and requires unique transformers. This tube is not supported by any manufactureres... |
