Remembering Ray Charles
Phil Ramon, who produced many of Ray's music, wrote about recording him in his book "Making Records", which is a great read. An yes, Ray was a genius.
EAR 834P Phono Pre
I agree, over rated. I had personal experience with two different models of the the 834. I move up to a VAS Citation I, as a pre with many, many features. Much better sound. I have tried the ARC PH 3 and 5 and also found them lacking.
magnetic drive turntables
Best you couple your 'magnetic drive TT' with an electron microscope base, only course if you have the $50,000. Don't fall for the hype, and stealing, that these hi end TT promise.
$12K Laser turntable vs $12k hi-fi turntable?
Forget the laser. A few years ago when I and a partner wanted to distribute Keith Monks record cleaners, we found that the laser needed a super clean record. Otherwise, your sound will be magnified for defects.
What would be the best "attainable" Denon turntabl
Do a denon 47F with a 160 cartridge, but only if you can pick one up, not shipped. That way it will work. Shipping, regardless of packing will damage the unit.
SACD player with digital input
I suggest you don't invest anymore in SACD and wait for the Blu-Ray Audio releases. If you have any of the 2L blu ray releases, that often come with the SACD equivalent, you will get some idea of the things to come. I have their Trondheimsolistene...
Cartridge 4 Denon Direct Drive DP-59L Turntable
I second the shure m97xe. I use it on a couple of denon's I have given away to my kids. Great sound.
Audio Gear Opinions
Before you spend another dime, read Toole's 'Sound REproduction'. Set up will be everything.
best cartridge under $500
Shure 97, must be heard. I know, can a $50 cartridge be good? Yes!
SACD vs. Vinyl
I am a big vinyl fan, but have a small library of SACD's. I have a few titles on both vinyl, r2r, cd and SACD. The title best known is Miles/Blue. I would rank each media, best first, as r2r (pre-recorded commerical 7.5 two track), vinyl, sacd, cd...
Under $1,000 Cartridge for Aries 2 Extended
Why waste money. Try a Shure 97. I know, at $50 it cannot be great, but try it. It would make a great backup cartridge and will surprise you. Hey I have a Clearaudio $1800 running on an Aries, and the 97 gives it a run for the money.
Want to try Analog :
Make it easy on your self. Find a Denon 47F with a Denon 160 cartridge. No fussy set up, just great analog sound. If that pleases you, move up. General the 47F is about $250. It was some automated features, hence the 'f' designation. Enough to rea...
What is Half track and quarter track?
The Technics RS1500 series was a quarter inch, two track machine for recording and playback. However, it also would play 4 track tapes via a switch on the head block. Great machine and is the choice for Tape Project restorations.
This is no joke.
Now you know what people in the high end sell. Hey, I have a ton of Christmas tree ornament holders that you can use to hang ornaments from. I use these to watch acoustic energy fly in the space. Improves the sound, I think. Maybe I should take a ...
best used inexpensive cd only player
A poor man is what many divorced men become. However, there is hope in a Sony 595 often available from SonyStyle as a refurb for $60, shipped. Hey if you don't like it they come get it for free with credit for the full price paid including shippin...
