What is “warmth” and how do you get it?
Looking back on this thread, I have another thought...There has been a lot of discussion about how increasing warmth in a system might involve ADDING something to the signal, like low order harmonics. It occurs to me that increasing warmth might a...
Speaker crossover mod. Your advice?
Will do.
Speaker crossover mod. Your advice?
I have read a large fraction of the Mundorf s/o thread, the entire humblehomemadehifi shootout, and several others threads devoted to caps and crossover mods. I now have a plan...1. Tweeter cap C1. Replace with a single 3.6uF ClarityCap MR.2. Twee...
what speakers demand high end electronics
I agree with Mordante. IME, the more revealing the speaker, the higher quality other components in the system need to be for the speaker to sound its best. A less revealing speaker will in effect act as a filter, concealing to some extent the flaw...
What is “warmth” and how do you get it?
I'm not sure that the variable/constant distinction is particularly meaningful, even within the limited context of harmonic distortion. The harmonic components resulting from distortion in the electronics will continuously vary as a function of th...
What is “warmth” and how do you get it?
02-23-11: Mrtennisthe purpose of the thread , i believe, is the elicitation of suggestions to achieve warmth.as i have said, without an understanding of what warmth is, the question cannot be answered. This is a valid observation, Mrtennis, but I h...
What is “warmth” and how do you get it?
02-21-11: Almarg…the system can certainly, as I see it, CREATE a harmonic, as a distortion product of the fundamental frequency of the note, irrespective of the existence of that harmonic in the original signal. 02-22-11: KijankiHarmonic distorti...
How can a 40 watt amp outshine a 140 watt amp
02-20-11: SchipoRichard Clark normally has CD source, amplifiers, high quality home audio speakers, and listening environment set up in advance. But if the listener requests, they can substitute whatever source, source material, amplifiers, speake...
Speaker crossover mod. Your advice?
Thanks for the warning, Al. That's just the kind of rookie mistake I was hoping to avoid.RE: The lack of room on the circuit board for the new caps...Another poster suggested (in private email) that I build a small platform to go above the existin...
Speaker crossover mod. Your advice?
...use a half-inch-square chunk of wood on the board as a spacer, cap on the wood, 3M foam tape holding all layers together, and a plastic ziptie thru the board. Thanks, Jeffrey. I was thinking of doing something like this.Last rookie question for ...
What is “warmth” and how do you get it?
02-17-11: LearsfoolThe only quibble I still have with this discussion is with the importance many of you are placing on minute changes of amplitude in overtones within a musician's timbre as being the major factor in a perception of "warmth." (I a...
Speaker crossover mod. Your advice?
Face - Sorry, my last post wasn't that clear. The tweeter has 2 caps associated with it - C1 and C2 - that are 3.6uF and 6.8uF. What I was trying to say in my last post is that I'm currently leaning toward doing this:1. Replacing the stock 3.6uF c...
Speaker crossover mod. Your advice?
Thanks Jeffrey. Not trying to make things difficult. Trying not to make a mistake I will regret. To a pro, a rookie's caution may seem silly. But we are all rookies at one time or another.Speaking of not making a mistake...As Magfan pointed out, i...
What is “warmth” and how do you get it?
02-16-11: NewbeeTubes. If you have speakers appropriate to your room and to tubes in the first place, and these speakers have a reasonably good sense of 'natural' resolution, by using tube equipment and carefully using (rolling) tubes therein to g...
What is “warmth” and how do you get it?
02-16-11: Unsound"...While other hall effects might sound cool". Yes, but I would think that's more likely in small, highly reverberant halls, and not as likely to happen in typical concert venues.02-16-11: AlmargI can't remember ever being in a h...
