Home grown turntable platform/base?
@bdp24    +1  I might also suggest substituting THICK maple butcher block, 2 1/2" or greater, for the baltic birch.  It would require two of the butcher blocks to accomplish your goal, but it would work.  Thin sorbothane sheets between the layers ...
VPI Prime or Scout or ???
@gochurchgo - My opinion....Everything else being equal, my opinion on the listed tables is that it would be either the Clearaudio Performance or the Prime / 3D arm.  I think the 3D arm on the Prime would push the VPI ahead.  IMO, a good arm seems...
VPI Prime or Scout or ???
My opinion based on years of experience....Let's compare rega tables against similarly priced competition.  Sine they are mentioned above, we can look at the RP8 and RP6 as examples using Acoustic Sounds web site as a reference....RP8 ($3000 - $42...
What is the average lifespan of a phono cartridge?
Agree with @chakster .  Different stylus profiles have different lifespans.  Also, the construction quality of a stylus can impact lifespan (crystal structure alignment).  The various line contact styles / profiles listed by chaster have a larger ...

@elubow - My opinion.Once burned, shame on you. Twice burned, shame on me. Three times burned without any success is a significant enough sampling for me.  rega?  Never again..I've had three VPI tables and two AR tables that all worked and sounded...
What is the average lifespan of a phono cartridge?
How long a cartridge will last is a kind of vague question.  More specific reference to components in the cartridge might be necessary.Stylus shape, stylus composition, crystal orientation, tracking force, record condition, user habits and other f...
VPI Prime or Scout or ???
@mayoradamwest - Yes, it will sound much better than a similarly priced rega.

@elibow - You asked....I have had a particularly bad experience with a couple of rega tables.  Cheap parts, poor qc, substandard performance.  Silk purse / sow's ear.  The ONLY redeeming quality I found was that it was fairly easy to set up becaus...

There is a Denon DP6000 for sale $790 on another site related to an audio asylum.
VPI Prime or Scout or ???
@gochurchgo - A VPI Prime Scout table will perform better than stock just by putting the plinth on solid cones or Bear Claw footers and getting the table OFF of the feet VPI provides.  VPI feet lower the performance of these otherwise very good ta...

My opinion...Technics and VPI at the topPro-JectI would place the regas at the bottom of the list / table of last resort.  But that's just me (and ALL my family, friends and acquaintances).   A used HW-19/III would be a very good and IMO better pe...
I need your help. I have an ARC Ref 3, ARC 110, Vandersteen 5As, but no turntable.
What @rauliruegas is trying to describe has been worked out over 50 years ago and has been generally a non-factor for the last 49 years. Any decent phono stage will handle RIAA EQ with aplomb. And the phono circuit is all about good design and ref...

One more thing. Tonearm cable. It is the most important cable in the chain, again don't save on it and don't rush with the choice. And keep the cable run as short as possible.  That will help minimize the cable interaction with the musical signal.
Which Tonearm to go for VPI HW-19 III?
Here is my not-so-brief history and opinions on the arms I've used on my HW-19/III.  Maybe too long and detailed, but here it is....I used (and still own) a HW-19/III.  Loved it.  During its use as my primary table, I used a Grace 707, a Linn Basi...
Phono cable and preamp for soundsmith Carmen mk2
@hook68 - Look for used.  A Herron Audio VTPH-1 is an outstanding phono stage and probably could be found in your price range.  Like @bdp24 wote, Keith Herron takes trades.  He might be a good source for a deal on a used unit.  Email is your frien...
