Headphone question Thanks, atmasphere. The two signal paths are completely different. The recording chain is: Turntable (Thorens TD-166 MkII, with either Ortofon OM-30 or Denon TD-160 cartridges) > McIntosh C220 preamp w/MM phono section > Kenwood graphic/p...
Just how great is Elvis Costello Sorry, tooblue. Such is the nature of internet threads.r_f_sayles - I concure. Artists are and ought to be free to express themselves however they wish. Consumers of art are and ought to be free to either enjoy the art or choose something else ...
Just how great is Elvis Costello r_f_sayles: Just to expand on my comment, some artists place their politics in their work, some don't, and there is a continuum of how often that occurs that varies by artist. It has nothing to do with EC's demeanor, as far as I am concerned. I...
Ohm Walsh Micro Talls: who's actually heard 'em? frazeur1 - Thanks. Good points, all, and I concur. It's like sausage. Who cares what it looks like being made when the results are so pleasing!Mapman - The only other omnis I've heard are the MBLs (extraordinary). I did hear those new electros...
Can "Refurbished" Thorens turntables sound better, and worth taking a chance on?? AFAIK, the TD-160 and the TD-166 MkII are identical except for the 'arm, although I could be mistaken. And the tonearm for the 166 MkII is a carbon-fiber design with detachable wand which was cutting edge tonearm technology in its' day.
Can "Refurbished" Thorens turntables sound better, and worth taking a chance on?? FWIW - I have had the same TD-166 MkII since I bought it new in 1984 (when I feared that turntables would no longer be available - hah!). I have had it modded somewhat - some damping of the platter, a new mat, new RCA cables and new feet to bette...
Ohm Walsh Micro Talls: who's actually heard 'em? acurus - Thanks for the pics. Most of us Ohm owners have never seen the drivers that give us so much pleasure. I have to admit, the driver looks fairly conventional compared with the original Ohm Walsh drivers. But who cares? The end results s...
Ohm Walsh Micro Talls: who's actually heard 'em? blueranger: I had put up quite a few foam panels on the back-wall, and at the first reflection points on the ceiling and side-walls. I felt things sounded too dead, so I removed some, and noticed an improvement in dynamic impact and a wider soun...
Just how great is Elvis Costello After rejecting EC when I first heard his debut LP in 1977, I grew to be a huge fan of all of his work by 1979. I saw him twice in concert (a great live performer), once in Jersey and once on the pier in NYC, in the early 1980s. I do own, but ra...
Are Ohm-Walsh micros and 1000 series disrespected because of omni-directional design?? jbmays - IMHO, a rebuild will be well worth it. Ohm has improved the quality of the materials used, and the life of the Ohm Walsh drivers, at least the current models, is estimated by Ohm to be 40-50 years before repairs will be needed due to nor...
Ohm Walsh Micro Talls: who's actually heard 'em? Accurus - I am not sure how to email you via this site, but the link is soundanchors[dotcom]/products/2085/floor-basesI am not associated in any way with Sound Anchors, other than as a satisfied customer.
Ohm Walsh Micro Talls: who's actually heard 'em? Oh, as for the upper treble, I concur with your assessment. I have wondered what the 2000s would sound like with a folded ribbon tweeter, or an omni tweeter. But again, this tends to be recording-dependent, IME. I agree with mapman here. Remem...
Ohm Walsh Micro Talls: who's actually heard 'em? Accurus - I would suspect room accoustics, but my Walsh 2000s do hieght extremely well. On some material, the voice sounds as if it is pressed against the low, 6' ceiling in my basement man cave. However, particularly when it comes to image plac...
Are Ohm-Walsh micros and 1000 series disrespected because of omni-directional design?? Sunnyjim: As a happy owner (for 5+ years) of the Ohm Walsh 2000s, I beg to differ with your preconceptions of omni sound in general and Ohm Walsh sound in particular. You can read my impressions in the review section of this site, as well as on ...
Best speakers for Pink Floyd? Standard CDs of PF sound wonderful on my Ohm Walsh 2000s. Just don't use Magicos, YG Acoustics, or Morel loudspeakers. You know how Waters absolutely hates Israelis. |
