The best speaker you ever heard?
Perhaps the Magneplanar Tympani T-IVa, overall. For "small" music the original Quad, unquestionably.
Why are the Infinity IRS, Reference 1b, Beta ect speakers passive on the mids and highs?
An active electronic x/o need not necessarily contain opamps, or ic’s as well. As an example, my First Watt B4 is free of both, and it’s use in a bi-amped speaker system can make for a better product than almost all non-bi-amped speakers using spe...
Best value record cleaner/cleaning system
After graduating from the Discwasher to a Nitty Gritty when it was first introduced, and then to a VPI HW-16, I much preferred the VPI. Not only does the VPI Vacuum suck the LP dry much quicker (in two revolutions) than the NG, but its platter pro...
Owens Corning 703 vs. Roxul Safe 'n' Sound?
Thanks Brad, the Acoustimac line looks great, and reasonably priced. A 4' x 4' x 2" panel is only $122, but the shipping to me (NW) is $140! Guess I'll make it myself.
A speaker that looks like a driver or a driver that looks like a speaker?
DT will want a pair for his golden palace, the speaker being so shiny and all.
Owens Corning 703 vs. Roxul Safe 'n' Sound?
Thanks auxinput. My ESL (old Quads) and magnetic-planar (Magneplanar Tympani T-IV) speakers don’t splatter much sound on the side walls, having the dipole null on either side and being pretty directional at higher frequencies, with the tweeter str...
break in
It's not like you can't listen through a component that isn't fully broken in. I mean, the sound isn't so bad as to be unlistenable, is it? It's only a matter of degree, right? How spoiled are we?! No offense intended Mike!---Eric.
Owens Corning 703 vs. Roxul Safe 'n' Sound?
Thanks Spencer. I am able to have my planar speakers (ESL’s and magnetic-planars) 5’ from the wall behind them, so I’m going to try diffusion there first, with absorption only directly behind the listening position---Eric.
One of the coolest articles on sound and vibration I can recall having read
Very interesting Ivan, and great! Related to harmonic fifths is the circle of 5ths, as established by J.S. Bach in the 18th Century. In a video on You Tube, Leonard Bernstein explains and demonstrates musical theory, culminating in the 5ths. Highl...
A speaker that looks like a driver or a driver that looks like a speaker?
Looks like it got pulled out of a car door. Cheap and tacky.
Owens Corning 703 vs. Roxul Safe 'n' Sound?
Thanks for the advice and link. I’m not covering much wall, just right behind my listening chair, and only because I have to be very close to it. The wall behind the speakers and the sidewalls will have diffusion. The room is intrinsically pretty ...
Feedback through turntable
Good stuff Slaw. I want to get rid of the last of the rubber in my system, the inner tubes in the original Seismic platforms. I have been planning on getting some of Geoffs springs, and perhaps some of the current Townshend Seismic Pods. I find th...
Looking to upgrade my preamp, suggestions?
If you keep the LS2, try a Mullard 6DJ8 in it. If it sells, an LS26 just came up on Audiogon, asking price $2750. It uses the 6H30 tube.
Cables for rear surrounds
I don't know the answer, I'm just asking: Is 16g enough wire for a 50' run, or should suncore consider 14g, or even 12g?
Audio Research 610T
Damn, can you imagine what is must cost to ship a 610T ?!
