Do equipment stands have an impact on electronics?
Geez, I go to sleep for a few hours, and my post and four responses get deleted. Wonder what I missed---musta been good stuff!I can’t smoke---makes me very paranoid. I stick to the booze. Lower chakra ;-).
Equipment Rack
No, but I went to Ikea to look at them (as well as bookcases for LP storage). For $15, worth a try! Keep the receipt---if you don't like them, return for a refund.
Materials to reduce sidewall flex & vibration ?
Yeah, the extra panels attached to the outside of the enclosure. For the interior, an alternative to wooden dowels is threaded steel rods, inserted into the enclosure through holes drilled into opposing enclosure walls, each rod screwed into oppos...
Bands who'se names describe thier sound.
There are also quite a few videos on You Tube of Robbie talking about The Hawks/Band. Fascinating.
Solid State Amps for Quad ESL 57?
Yeah Bill, Pearson had really high ambitions and aspirations for TAS, sometimes unachievable. Moncrieff had his own unique reviewing and writing style (which was to beat a subject to death, saying the same thing three different ways)---whatever ha...
Phoenix Engineering Falcon and Eagle
Leo, there are some still available somewhere? Enlighten me!
Review: Schiit Mani phono pre AND Swagman Labs Linear Power Supply (LPS)
An interesting design feature of the Mani is the 30dB gain setting for the 5mV output Decca/London cartridges.
Best female vocal recording on CD?
Wow, some great suggestions. I am once again reminded that I’m amongst kindred spirits here on AudiogoN! The mention of Joe Boyd (who does really quality work, starting the great label Hannibal Records) has reminded me of an album produced by Boyd...
Experimenting with reversing polarity to speakers
I wish all pre-amps had a polarity switch on the front panel, as Atma-Sphere's do.
New in 2017
Right Marty, Hiatt's Perfectly Good Guitar album tour. That album was a radical change from the previous two, Bring The Family and Slow Turning, both of which I loved (still do, of course!). I had mixed feelings about PGG upon it's release, but he...
Tune of the Day
"Somebody Loan Me A Dime" by Boz Skaggs. A great recording with Duane Allman on guitar, Tracy Nelson on piano, Barry Beckett on organ, David Hood on bass, and the incomparably great Roger Hawkins on drums. A stone classic!
Solid State Amps for Quad ESL 57?
One great way to add bass to the 57 is with a pair of Magneplanar Tympani bass panels. They take a fair amount of floor space, however---each is 32"w x 6'h! That's what Harry Pearson mated with the m/t panels of the Infinity IRS to create his hybr...
Best female vocal recording on CD?
Old favorites of mine are Maryann Price and Naomi Ruth Eisenberg, the two singers of Dan Hicks And His Hot Licks in the 1970’s. They’re great on the studio-recorded Striking It Rich and the recorded-live-at-The Troubadour Where’s The Money? As a b...
Solid State Amps for Quad ESL 57?
Chris (ct0517), I believe the RM-9 is no longer available, even as a special order. I could be mistaken however. Roger has relocated to the Bay Area, and appears to be more involved in his Audio Engineering school than in running Music Reference. ...
Why are low impedance speakers harder to drive than high impedance speakers
Bruce Thigpen, designer and builder of the Eminent Technology LFT-8b magnetic-planar loudspeaker, states in the product’s literature that he could have made the speaker any impedance he wanted, and chose a nominal 8 ohms. The LFT-8b is a hybrid (e...
