carp, the op isn't looking for black lacquer paint, he's looking for black lacker. I think I may know why he's not having any luck. ;-)
What’s really hurting the audio hobby?
In the 1960’s, the home of everyone I knew had a console TV/radio/record player. That’s what all we kids played our 7" 45’s and LP’s on. In the summer of ’68, I heard my first component system: a good friend, who had left San Jose in the fall of ’...
Just received shipment of my Magnepan LRS’s
Because of the limited bass output of the LRS, Magnepan has been asked for their opinion on the subject of adding a subwoofer or two to the loudspeaker. In a post today on The Planar Speaker Asylum, Wendell Diller's PSA spokesperson Josh related t...
How many turntable’s have you owned?
@bpoletti, nice to see the Aries get it’s props! Nice simplified version of the overly complicated TNT (the various suspension towers, the 3-point belt path, the dual motors, etc. etc.), easily improved with after-market isolation feet (I use Town...
Free Lead Shot in Portland, OR (125 lbs)
Man, those are some nice racks Simon! I see the drawers are made of Baltic Birch ply. Beautiful stuff. Somebody local jump on 'em!
The term "High End" needs to die. Long live Hi-Fidelity!
J. Gordon Holt himself found the term objectionable, preferring to use High Performance. What I did not yet know when I saw the term in the early issues of The Absolute Sound, was that the term was already in use in other types of consumer goods--...
First Post- what not to do
Don’t let your maid---I mean cleaning woman, or housekeeper, or whatever you call yours (I've never had one)---dust your turntable.
Rolling stones 100 greatest 100 albums?
A couple of them are not half-bad.
The Golden era of Japanese integrated amps, are we missing out?
EAR-Yoshino's Tim deParavicini designed many of the Luxman integrated amps. Good stuff.
The term "High End" needs to die. Long live Hi-Fidelity!
Amen, brother! Harry Pearson introduced the term into hi-fi criticism, and it just reeks of elitism and snobbishness. If there were a dictionary of hi-fi terms, there would be a picture of Jonathan Scull next to the term. ;-)
Your favourite music movie?
Stardust (1974), music by Dave Edmunds.
Synergestic Black Fuse vs Audio Magic BeesWax
@gormdane, the most dedicated Maggie owners bypass the entire fuse assembly, and replace the stock speaker cable hookup connectors . The holes drilled in the speaker’s back panel for the speaker cable connectors (horrid things, containing parts ma...
Quick and free fuse tweak
Those big square egg cartons have been used to tame the acoustics of garages by, yes, garage bands at least as far back as the mid-60's, when every suburban block in San Jose/Cupertino (and the rest of the South Bay) had a band practicing after hi...
Is this sign of getting old?
Geez shk, if you thought Elvis’ voice was too "rugged" (odd word choice to describe a voice ;-), what do you think of Howlin’ Wolf? Wolf makes Elvis (and just about everyone else) sound like a p*ssy.
Quick and free fuse tweak
If you’re hard-core enough to be concerned about the sound of fuses, consider eliminating them altogether, as ARC does on the power tubes in their amps. When Ric Schultz at EVS was modifying the Audible Illusions Modulus 2 pre-amp, he offered that...
