The 5 stages of making a bad audio purchase In the mid-2000's I met the dealer who was supplying Dylan with his smoke (he had a home-delivery business). At that time Bob liked Goofy Grape ;-) .
First order/Time Phase-Coherent speakers discussions As Danny Richie (GR Research) explains in his series of excellent You Tube videos on the subject of loudspeaker design, cross-over design is a matter of getting the individual drivers to coalesce. He uses the waterfall plot as his number one desig...
How much do you need to spend to get digital to rival analog? It all comes back to the recording, and the disc. Ya know, there ARE plenty of bad sounding LP’s. Besides, if an album is available on CD only, what are ya gonna do, deprive yourself of the music just because you think analog sounds better than di...
List of most high end analog active crossovers ever made. Lew, I think Roger Modjeski (who designed the electronics for Beveridge) has an updated/improved x/o for the 2SW, as well as a new dedicated direct-drive tube amp for the speaker.I had the Dahlquitst DQ-LP1 for years, selling it only after I got a...
VPI's new "Vanquish" Ultra High-End turntable is a STUNNER! Luckily @br3098, the Aries 1 motor collar is removable. And just about any 9 or 10" arm can be used in place of the JMW 10.
US source of Panzerholtz? Fantastic discussion and information, particularly in the @phoenixengr link. Gotta get some me Corian! Bill, do you think slate is approximately the same as granite in terms of stiffness, resonance, self-damped characteristics, etc? I like the loo...
How do you rationalize audio upgrades? A good rationalization for spending more now is that in the long run it's cheaper. You lose money with every upgrade.
First order/Time Phase-Coherent speakers discussions For excellent tutorials on loudspeaker design, watch the You Tube videos on the subject made by Danny Richie (GR Research) in conjunction with Ron of New Record Day fame.
Budget Tube Amp (newbie) All right, let me be brutally honest. What is it you think a tube amp is going to give you (or do you just want to try one to see what all the "fuss" is about?). Did you get the Advents with a tube amp in mind? I ask because there are better old s...
Whats on your turntable tonight? @16f4, "Greens Onions" is SUCH a cool song! I made it the ring tone on my cell phone. Steve Cropper’s guitar tone on the song is about as wicked as I’ve ever heard. Have you heard the 1990's album by The Hellecasters? Three virtuoso Telecaster pla...
New Active Crossover... Bryston 10B, JL audio CR1, Pass Labs XVR1 or First Watt B5? By "So is the B4", I meant discontinued, not designed for OB's.
Vpi tnt or vpi rosewood prime b The TNT-3 and -4 have the same 1.25" Delrin/aluminum/lead platter as the Aries 1, the TNT-5 a 1.5" Delrin/stainless steel platter (no lead). HW switched to frosted acrylic for the Aries 2 & 3 and the TNT-6, a move he later admitted was a mistake.
Vpi tnt or vpi rosewood prime b The Rosewood Prime Signature is mighty purty. An alternative to the TNT is the Aries 1, which with it's TNT-3/4 Delrin/aluminum/lead platter, is imo superior to the TNT-1/2. Cheaper and smaller, too.
New Active Crossover... Bryston 10B, JL audio CR1, Pass Labs XVR1 or First Watt B5? I looked into the Pass, but it's over my card limit ;-). The Bryston is too limited in flexibility (slopes, frequencies, etc.). The First Watt B5 is designed specifically for OB loudspeakers and subs, and at any rate is discontinued. So is the B4,...
Vpi tnt or vpi rosewood prime b Having a VPI table does not mean you must have a VPI arm. You can take the VPI arm off the TNT (still a fine table imo) and mount any you want. The TNT makes a great platform for linear trackers, the ET being a favorite on the table. |
